LANG, Andrew (editor). The Orange Fairy Book. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1906. First edition, 8vo (182 x 119mm.) 8 colour plates. (Toning, occasional finger-mark and corner crease.) Original orange cloth, pictorial gilt, g.e. (gilt to covers and spine faded). – And a further two volumes edited by Andrew Lang (including a first edition of ‘The Pink Fairy Book’, 1897, 8vo) (3).

BINDINGS. – Laurence STERNE. The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. London: Macmillan and Co. Limited, 1911. 2 vols., 8vo (218 x 140mm.) (Mild toning.) Near contemporary red half morocco, t.e.g. (lightly rubbed extremities). – And a further thirty-four miscellaneous volumes, mostly bindings (36).

ILLUMINATED LEAF. – [NERIO.] [An early 14th century leaf from an Antiphonary, in Latin, from Bologna, Italy.] Single leaf (548 x 371mm.) A large vari-coloured historiated initial for the Common of Many Martyrs, one small decorative initial verso, staves in red and black. (Browned to right edge, some loss to vellum on black lettering of first text-line). Note: probably illuminated by Nerio, or someone in his immediate circle. ILLUMINATED LEAF. – [Giustino di GHERADINO.] [A mid to late 14th century leaf from an Antiphonary, in Latin, from Venice, Italy.] Single leaf (576 x 395mm.) A medium-sized vari-coloured historiated initial of Christ enthroned, two smaller decorative initials verso, staves in red and black. (Minor loss to gold of the initial, minor marks, slight dust-soiling verso). Note: probably illuminated by Giustino di Gheradino. ILLUMINATED LEAF. – [Giustino di GHERARDINO.] [A mid to late 14th century leaf from an Antiphonary, in Latin, from Venice, Italy.] Single leaf (578 x 397mm.) A medium-sized vari-coloured historiated initial of the Dormition of the Virgin, staves in red and black. (Browned to lower edge, yellowed verso, some rubbing to the gold). ILLUMINATED LEAVES. [Two mid-15th century illuminated leaves from an Antiphonary, in Latin, from Italy, possibly Bologna or Ferrara.] Single leaves (535 x 371mm.) 2 large vari-coloured historiated initials of a half-length prophet and another of St. Michael illuminated in the style of Giovanni d’ Antonio da Bologna, staves in red and black and 2 further decorative initials. (Marginal tear to the ‘half-prophet’ leaf and repairs to vellum at lower edge, some dust-soiling to both). Note: with thanks to Peter Kidd for his assistance in cataloguing this lot (2).

ILLUMINATED LEAF. [A mid-15th century illuminated leaf from a Gradual, in Latin, from Italy, possibly Florence.] Single leaf (574 x 405mm.) A large vari-coloured historiated initial of David appealing to God and three subsidiary scenes, decorative floral border and vignettes to three corners, staves in red and black. (Small worm-hole to centre, staining to margins, fading to borders). Note: with thanks to Peter Kidd for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.

ILLUMINATED LEAF. [A mid-15th century illuminated leaf from an Antiphonary, in Latin, from Italy, possibly Tuscany or Siena.] Single leaf (527 x 381mm.) A large vari-coloured historiated initial of St. Andrew, staves in red and black, 2 further decorative initials, leaf numbering to upper edge. (Some fading to Latin text, minor loss to the initial).

MANUSCRIPT LEAF. [A late 15th – early 16th century leaf from a choir psalter, in Latin, from Spain.] Single leaf (558 x 415mm.) Elaborate penwork initial in red and blue for Psalm 38, decorative border, 5 further decorative initials verso. (Browned verso and to lower edge, fading to the black lettering, roughly cut margin.) ILLUMINATED LEAF. [A late 15th- early 16th century illuminated leaf from an Antiphonary, in Latin from the Brölemann collection, France.] Single leaf (484 x 355mm.) A vari-coloured historiated initial of the Pentecost, a further four initials, three illuminated, staves in red and black and elaborate floral border with leaves and berries. A large vari-coloured historiated initial of the Apostles, a small decorative illuminated initial verso, staves in red and black with borders of leaves and berries. Three large vari-coloured historiated initials of the Pentecost, staves in red and black, five further decorative initials, manuscript numbering to upper margins. ILLUMINATED LEAF. [An early 16th century illuminated leaf from an Antiphonary, in Latin, from Italy.] Single leaf (668 x 480mm.) A large vari-coloured historiated initial of the Nativity, elaborate decorative borders, three further decorative initials. (Two small segments of the border excised and with later hand-coloured vellum replacements, some fading to the lower border, minor dust-soiling).
