(Mild toning, marginal closed tear to title.) [Bolton: n.p.: 1913.] Oblong folio (318 x 409mm.) 40 black and white photographs mounted on card of George V and Queen Mary visiting Bolton in 1913, including 16 smaller format photographs, 2pp. of newspaper cuttings mounted to rear. (Toning, occasional mark to margins.) Contemporary black morocco, gilt lettering to upper cover, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (rubbing to extremities, minor scuffing to lower cover). Note: George V and Queen Mary visited over fifty towns in the North West in 1913 and this memorial of the visit was presented to the Bolton mayor of the time, Dr. James Young. (Toning, marginal spotting to 3S3-3T3 of volume 1 and to 1 map, marginal insect-damage to A1-A3 of volume 1, occasional offsetting.) 20th century half calf with original morocco lettering pieces to spines (endpapers replaced). Decorative title, extra-illustrated with 111 engraved plates, including 1 folding and 2 comparative views of waterfalls by J. Rapkin with contemporary outline colouring and vignette illustration. (Lacking frontispiece of the 'Great Exhibition', 'Contents' and letterpress title, toning, a crease to 'Hungary', occasional marginal spotting and finger-mark, folding plate trimmed at margin, 'Newcastle' present but excised, minor soiling to 'The Lakes of Cumberland, Westmoreland, &c', some spotting to 'New York'.) Contemporary half calf (spine lacking, boards detached, worn). Provenance: Jane Hannah Horner (name inscribed to front-free endpaper). Note: normally published with 81 engraved plates, the 30 extra here are also published by J. and F. (Spotting to preliminaries and rear leaves, toning.) Original full vellum by Birdsall, gilt lettering to spine, gilt borders and floral corner-pieces to covers (faint scuffing to lower cover). GARDENING. - William ROBINSON. The English Flower Garden. London: John Murray, 1883. First edition, 8vo (227 x 140mm.) Numerous illustrations. (Mild toning, initial blank replaced.) Mid-20th century brown half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, gilt lettering to spine (endpapers replaced). Note: considered one of the most influential books on gardening, this work went through fifteen editions in Williams' lifetime. In rejecting the 'barren geometry' of the formal garden, Williams instead proposed gardens that emphasised the diversity of nature.

(Mild toning, spotting to preliminaries.) Original blue cloth (joints worn, sunning to spine). Original brown cloth, pictorial gilt to upper cover and spine (inner hinge weakened, joints split). Note: considered one of the most influential works on gardening, this work went through fifteen editions in Williams' lifetime. In rejecting the 'barren geometry' of the formal garden, Williams instead proposed gardens that emphasised the diversity of nature.
