MARTIN, Montgomery R. The Illustrated Atlas, and Modern History of the World, Geographical, Political, Commercial and Statistical. London: J. and F. Tallis, [1851.] Folio (370 x 279mm.) Decorative title, extra-illustrated with 111 engraved plates, including 1 folding and 2 comparative views of waterfalls by J. Rapkin with contemporary outline colouring and vignette illustration. (Lacking frontispiece of the 'Great Exhibition', 'Contents' and letterpress title, toning, a crease to 'Hungary', occasional marginal spotting and finger-mark, folding plate trimmed at margin, 'Newcastle' present but excised, minor soiling to 'The Lakes of Cumberland, Westmoreland, &c', some spotting to 'New York'.) Contemporary half calf (spine lacking, boards detached, worn). Provenance: Jane Hannah Horner (name inscribed to front-free endpaper). Note: normally published with 81 engraved plates, the 30 extra here are also published by J. and F. Tallis and are mainly street plans of U.K. cities but also includes a double-paged plan of New York and a plan of Boston.

GARDENING. - William ROBINSON. The Wild Garden, or the Naturalization and Natural Grouping of Hardy Exotic Plants with a Chapter on the Garden of British Wild Flowers. London: John Murray, 1895. Fifth edition, limited, being one of 280 copies, author's copy, 8vo (219 x 138mm.) Illustrations by Alfred Parsons, several marks and pencil annotation by the author. (Spotting to preliminaries and rear leaves, toning.) Original full vellum by Birdsall, gilt lettering to spine, gilt borders and floral corner-pieces to covers (faint scuffing to lower cover). Provenance: William Robinson (Gravetye Manor bookplate to front pastedown); Ernest Markham, head gardener to William Robinson (inscribed to by the author); Peter Herbert, late owner of Gravetye Manor (bookplate to the front-free endpaper). - And a further copy of 'The Wild Garden', signed by the author [to Mary Gilpin, William Robinson's nurse], 1929, 8vo) (2).

GARDENING. - William ROBINSON. The English Flower Garden. London: John Murray, 1883. First edition, 8vo (232 x 150mm.) Numerous illustrations. (Toning, occasional light spotting.) Original brown cloth, pictorial gilt to upper cover and spine (inner hinge weakened, joints split). Note: considered one of the most influential works on gardening, this work went through fifteen editions in Williams' lifetime. In rejecting the 'barren geometry' of the formal garden, Williams instead proposed gardens that emphasised the diversity of nature. Provenance: Peter Herbert, late owner of Gravetye Manor (bookplate to front pastedown). - And a further three volumes by William Robinson (including, with a mounted a.l.s., 'The English Flower Garden and Home Grounds', 1909, 8vo, and 'Alpine Flowers For English Gardens', 1870, 8vo, and a further copy of 'The English Flower Garden', 1921, 8vo) (4).
