GARDENING. - William ROBINSON. The English Flower Garden. London: John Murray, 1883. First edition, 8vo (227 x 140mm.) Numerous illustrations. (Mild toning, initial blank replaced.) Mid-20th century brown half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, gilt lettering to spine (endpapers replaced). Note: considered one of the most influential books on gardening, this work went through fifteen editions in Williams' lifetime. In rejecting the 'barren geometry' of the formal garden, Williams instead proposed gardens that emphasised the diversity of nature.
