LOT 3698
GARDENING. - William ROBINSON. The English Flower Garden. London: John Murray, 1883. First edition, 8vo (232 x 150mm.) Numerous illustrations. (Toning, occasional light spotting.) Original brown cloth, pictorial gilt to upper cover and spine (inner hinge weakened, joints split). Note: considered one of the most influential works on gardening, this work went through fifteen editions in Williams' lifetime. In rejecting the 'barren geometry' of the formal garden, Williams instead proposed gardens that emphasised the diversity of nature. Provenance: Peter Herbert, late owner of Gravetye Manor (bookplate to front pastedown). - And a further three volumes by William Robinson (including, with a mounted a.l.s., 'The English Flower Garden and Home Grounds', 1909, 8vo, and 'Alpine Flowers For English Gardens', 1870, 8vo, and a further copy of 'The English Flower Garden', 1921, 8vo) (4).
