Militaria, Medals and Awards

A collection of various Royal Navy related prisoner-of-war and other treen items, including boxes, photograph frames, some detailed to the backs and bases with details and place of manufacture, including 'Made by Men of The 1st R.N. Brigade interned in Holland'. Note: these items were produced in Groningen, Netherlands, by the 1st and 2nd Brigade Royal Navy after the withdrawal from Antwerp, when Commodore Henderson made the decision to take the brigades into neutral Netherlands to avoid capture by the enemy. International law decreed that these men could remain there for the duration of the war, where they produced novelties to sell as souvenirs.

A collection of collectables and ephemera relating to the Royal Navy, including a collection of cigarette card sets within an album and framed, all with a naval related theme, three volumes of 'Jane's Fighting Ships', including 1982-1983, another book 'In the Royal Naval Air Service... the War Letters of the Late Harold Rosher', published 1926, a collection of mounted press style black and white photographs and two documents relating to Alfred Comer, Royal Navy, including Certificate of Service, circa late 19th century.

A post-1901 Royal Court dress uniform by Tetley & Butler, Sackville St W, Piccadilly, London, comprising court sword with oval-section blade, blade length 79cm, engraved with foliate designs, and gilt cast metal hilt and guards with bullion knot, with gilt metal mounted black leather scabbard, bicorn hat, tailcoat, trousers and various accessories, within original tin trunk, engraved to the lid 'R.R. Bannatyne'.

Two mid-20th century standard issue service dress caps, both with embroidered and part-bullion badges, both with original cardboard boxes from Herbert Johnson Hatters, 38 New Bond Street, London, addressed to 'Major R.J. Buckland, Coldstream Guards, 63rd Infantry Division'.

A collection of medals and militaria belonging to Gunner Arthur R. Horton, Royal Artillery, including a group of five Second World War awards, comprising Burma Star, 1939-45 Star, War Medal, Defence Medal and Territorial Efficiency Medal to '916956 Gnr. A.R. Horton R.A.', boxed with entitlement slip, his British army slouch hat with applied badges, a collection of private and personal photographs, a collection of press photographs, various related ephemera and a part-section of a yosegaki hinomaru or prayer flag, taken from a Japanese soldier by Arthur Horton during conflict, later split and shared with his friend as a trophy of war, with enclosed photograph taken at the time of capture picturing him with two of his comrades, together with a Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve service certificate to Cecil Horton, probably Arthur's father, who was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

A collection of early to mid-19th century cast bronze model cannons and mortar cannons, some mounted on wood carriages, others on cast metal.

A rare late Victorian Hertfordshire Regiment officer's plumed helmet, the brass-mounted silver-plated skull body with applied pressed metal badge, horse-hair plume, part leather fitted interior and pressed metal ring-mounted leather chinstrap, height 40cm.

A 19th century boxwood folding gunner's rule with various measurements and gauges for powder, iron guns and carronades, mortars and range finding, together with a 19th century pincer for shot mould.

A rare First World War period steel medal die for the United States Victory Medal, together with a struck brass medal, a black and white photograph of the mascot dog of Co. F., 117 Engineers, 42nd (Rainbow) Division, wearing a tabard and a United States Victory Medal with bars, and a post-First World War period booklet, 'History of the 42nd The Rainbow Division' by Walter B. Wolf, printed by Rand, McNally & Co, New York, giving the written history of the group and its service during the Second World War.

A collection of 20th century British army regimental cap badges, including 'Long Range Desert Group', 'East Surrey' and 'Welsh Regiment'.

A First World War period photograph album containing various small format black and white photos of military life, including camps, trenches, training, bomb damage and soldiers in the field, together with a First World War period push-dagger, probably made from a nail.

A scarce First World War period copper trench art style double-aperture photograph frame, marked 'Falkland Isles, Dec 8 1914' and 'HMS Invincible', with textured borders and decorated with foliate branches, the centre detailed with a penguin, 17.5cm x 27.5cm. Note: probably made in commemoration of a decisive sea battle between British Vice Admiral Sir Doveton Sturdee and his adversary Admiral Graf von Spee.

A late Victorian brass bound leather cartridge box magazine, retailed by Harrods, Brompton Road, London, the hinged lid opening to reveal a fitted four-division interior (one divider lacking), the lid exterior embossed with the initials 'A.G.H.F.', the lid interior with gilt embossed label for Harrods Gun & Rifle Dept, with strap belts and swing handle, height 13cm, width 33cm, depth 25cm.

An early 20th century brass bound leather cartridge box magazine for approximately 300 cartridges, with six compartments and interior lid bearing paper label for Holland & Holland, the exterior lid with embossed and gilt-highlighted initials 'C.R.C.H.' (overall restoration, worm damage to sides).

A collection of First World War period items, including a pair of French field binoculars by A. Tubeuf, Paris, with leather case, stamped to the lid 'John & Bennett Green 1917' and with various government marks, a Victory Medal to 'Lieut. G.P. Riach' and a trench art pocket knife of bullet form. Note: Lieutenant G.P. Riach, possibly of 1st Battalion The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, died 24th September 1918.

A scarce late Victorian 13th Madras Infantry waistbelt clasp with gilt cast metal body and silver metal overlay detailing, together with a late Victorian Madras Native Infantry helmet plate badge (faults, misshapen and some parts lost).

A rare First World War period German/Prussian gold and iron presentation ring, engraved to the steel outer band 'Gold gab ich für eisen 1914 O.S.K' [I gave gold for iron], the core of rose gold. Note: these rings were presented by the government in 1914 after asking citizens to donate gold for the war effort, who would get steel jewellery in return. This example possibly had the gold core added by the recipient, although it appears contemporary to the piece.

A medieval style wrought steel battle axe head with wide-section blade, shaped collar and opposing arrow shaped spike, total length 41cm (overall pitted and with recent heavy cleaning). Note: axes of this style are usually of European origin.

A scarce late Victorian gilt metal British regimental colours finial, detailed with a crowned lion supported on a late Victorian high-arched crown, mounted on a green painted cast bell metal domed circular base, height 18.5cm.
