KENT. – Thomas PHILIPOTT. Villare Cantianum: or Kent Surveyed and Illustrated. Being an exact Description of all the Parishes, Burroughs, Villages, and other respective Mannors Included in the County of Kent. London: William Godbid, 1659. First edition, folio signed in 4s (288 x 179mm.) Engraved initial and engraved illustrations in the text, a long near contemporary ink inscription on the second blank relating to authorship of the book. (Lacking map, marginal tear to B3 and minor soiling to G2, browning and damp-staining throughout, occasional ink annotation and underlining, first and rear blanks replaced.) Contemporary speckled calf, later red morocco lettering piece to the spine (rebacked and tips repaired, endpapers replaced). Note: the ink inscription on the second blank is a quote from White Kennet, being pp.37-38 of his ‘Life of William Somner’ that was published in Somner’s ‘Treatise of the Roman Ports and Forts in Kent’, 1693, where he established that Thomas Philipott’s father, John, was the author of ‘Villare Cantianum’. PRINTING. – James DOYLE. A Chronicle of England B.C. 55- A.D. 1485. London: Longman, Green, et al., 1864. First edition, 4to (270 x 194mm.) Title in red and black, numerous wood-engraved colour illustrations printed by Edmund Evans. (Small mark to half-title, toning.) Near contemporary green straight-grain morocco bound by Riviere with gilt fillet borders, the spine in five compartments with double raised bands and red morocco onlays between, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (minor scuffing and staining to upper covers, rebacked with original spine laid-down). Note: with each illustration printed in up to ten colours, Evans considered this ‘the most carefully executed book I have ever printed’.

BOËTHIUS, Gerda. Anders Zorn. Stockholm: Nordisk Rotogravyr, 1954. Limited edition, this being number 680 of 1200 copies, 4to (288 x 211mm.) Tipped-in colour plates, numerous black and white illustrations. (Toned, slight marginal damp-stain to preliminaries.) Original brown full morocco, Zorn’s blind-stamped signature to upper cover, red and green morocco lettering pieces to the spine, t.e.g. (minor staining to covers).

Near contemporary green half morocco over marbled paper-covered boards (extremities lightly rubbed, upper cover corner heavily rubbed). Provenance: G.F. de[?] Wilde (ink name inscribed to title). Note: includes a tipped-in photographic postcard titled ‘The Crawley and Horsham Hunt at Ashington. (Run to Earth)’.

(Toning, ink stamps [dated 1967] to title, marginal paper repair to one text leaf.) Original red cloth-backed pictorial boards (extremities rubbed, minor scratches and stains to lower cover). Note: all pop-ups in original working order and all the bars are intact.
