Engraved initial and engraved illustrations in the text, a long near contemporary ink inscription on the second blank relating to authorship of the book. (Lacking map, marginal tear to B3 and minor soiling to G2, browning and damp-staining throughout, occasional ink annotation and underlining, first and rear blanks replaced.) Contemporary speckled calf, later red morocco lettering piece to the spine (rebacked and tips repaired, endpapers replaced). Note: the ink inscription on the second blank is a quote from White Kennet, being pp.37-38 of his ‘Life of William Somner’ that was published in Somner’s ‘Treatise of the Roman Ports and Forts in Kent’, 1693, where he established that Thomas Philipott’s father, John, was the author of ‘Villare Cantianum’.
