Contemporary calf, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (rubbing to extremities). Note: originally published in French in 1732, and considered to be the first work of descriptive anatomy. Provenance: G. Coltman (ink name to f.f.e.p.).

HEISTER, Laurence [Lorenz]. Medical, Chirurgical, and Anatomical Cases and Observations… translated from the German Original by George Wirgman. London: J. Reeves, L. Hawes, J. Baldwin, et al., 1755. First English edition, 4to (259 x 200mm.) Title with engraved vignette, 8 folding engraved plates, 16pp. 'Contents', 6pp. 'Appendix' to rear. (Browning, occasional spotting, a few corner creases, some damp-staining to the plates.) Contemporary calf, gilt lettering to spine (rebacked, endpapers replaced, rubbing to extremities). Note: initially published in 1731 the 'Chirurgical' was an influential work on surgery that was translated into several languages, and was still used as the standard text in Vienna until 1838. Provenance: Reinhard Neuman? (bookplate to the front pastedown).

THEOLOGY. - Benitio Remigo NOYDENS. Practica de Curas y Confessores y Doctrina para Penitentes. Madrid: Castilla y Aragon, Francisco Serrano, et al., 1667. Folio (288 x 201mm.) Title, additional title in red and black, engraved coat-of-arms, decorative initials, text in 2 columns, 25pp. 'Tabla' to rear. (Ink marks and contemporary inscription verso of title, damp-staining A1-H, browning, sometimes heavy, spotting, last three leaves- Vv5-Xx1- with marginal loss.) Contemporary vellum (soiled). Note: a rare manual of moral theology, first published in Valencia in 1652. Collates *1-*6, A-Z6, Aa-Xx1.

[BOILEAU, Abbé Jacques and John Lewis DELOLME]. The History of the Flagellants, or the Advantages of Discipline. London: Fielding and Walker, 1777. 4to (277 x 218mm.) Half-title, 4 engraved head and tailpieces, including vignette to title, 4 engraved plates, 9pp. index to rear. (Slight spotting to plate margins, corner cut from half-title, name excised from front pastedown.) 19th century black morocco bound by F. Bedford, five raised bands to spine, gilt lettering to the second compartment, repeating gilt design to the rest, t.e.g. (some rubbing to spine ends). Note: an illustrated and expanded adaption of Abbé Boileau's 'Historia Flagellantium', published in 1700. Provenance: George Clive, barrister and politician (bookplate to the front pastedown).

STANNARD, Henry (illustrator). The Life of Cock Robin with The Trial of the Sparrow. London: Frederick Warne and Co., [circa 1880.] 10 colour-printed plates, 2 double-page. (Toning, slight browning, occasional spotting verso the plates, crease to the f.f.e.p..) Original pictorial cloth (wear to spine ends, some fading, soiling to rear). Provenance: 'Charlie' (gift inscribed verso the f.f.e.p.). - And eleven further illustrated volumes (including George Cruikshank's 'Table-Book', 1845, 8vo) (12).

BRITAIN. - Thomas MADOX. Baronia Anglica. An History of Land-Honors and Baronies, and of Tenure in Capite, verified by record. London: Francis Gosling, 1741. Second edition, folio (357 x 222mm.) Engraved ornaments and historiated initials, 27pp. index to rear. (Occasional browning, some pencil underlining.) Contemporary calf, gilt borders and repeating gilt design to spine (lacking lettering piece to the spine, lightly rubbed, some fading). Note: Madox became Royal historiographer in 1714 and according to H. Hazeltine this work 'presents us with a picture, partial as it may be, as Madox himself admitted, of feudalism in its constitutional aspect'.

CLEAVELAND, E. A Genealogical History of the Noble and Illustrious Family of Courtenay, in Three Parts. Exeter: Edward Farley, 1735. Folio (349 x 218mm.) Engraved initials and ornaments, 13 genealogies. (Browning, occasional spotting, some pencil annotations to margins and f.f.e.p..) Near contemporary tree calf, red morocco lettering piece and repeating floral gilt designs to the spine (lightly rubbed extremities). Note: the Courtenay's of Powderham Castle are one of the oldest families in England, mentioned in the Domesday Book, and the Castle was the site of a long and bitter siege during the Civil War. Includes some hand-written notes and related ephemera.

ENGRAVINGS. Gems of Ancient Art, or Select Specimens from the Old Masters consisting of Forty Engravings by Eminent Artists. London: Howlett and Brimmer, 1827. Folio (328 x 227mm.) 40 uncoloured aquatint plates on India paper, including frontispiece. (Spotting to plate margins, occasional soiling.) Contemporary black half-morocco, gilt lettering to spine, g.e. (surface rubbing and to extremities). - And four further illustrated volumes (including volume 2 of G.N. Wright's 'The Rhine, Italy and Greece', 1841, 4to) (5).

(Some spotting to preliminaries, browning to margins.) Title in red and black, 2 folding engraved plates, 9pp. index of place names to rear. (A crease to the preliminaries, ink mark to margin of last text leaf, spotting to front and rear blanks.) Near contemporary speckled calf, later red morocco lettering piece to the spine (rubbing to extremities, and to spine). Note: large paper edition. Provenance: Marquis of Hastings (pencil note to the front pastedown).

HEATH, Charles (engraver). Views of London. London: Hurst, Robinson, & Co., R. Jennings, [1825.] Large paper copy, 4to (372 x 249mm.) Engraved title and 45 plates by Charles Heath after Dewint, Westall and Mackenzie, mounted on India paper with tissue-guards and letterpress text leaf describing each. (Spotting to title and plate margins, most plates disbound.) Later brown half-morocco, gilt titling to spine (rubbing to extremities). Provenance: Francis Gray Smart (bookplate to front pastedown).

PYNE, William Henry. The History of the Royal Residences of Windsor Castle, St. James's Palace, Carlton House, Kensington Palace, Hampton Court, Buckingham House, and Frogmore. London: for A. Dry, 1819. Vol. 2 (only), first edition, 4to (348 x 279mm.) Title, dedication, half-title, 37 aquatint plates of Royal residences (4 hand-coloured). (Toning to margins, occasional browning.) Later half-brown morocco, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (endpapers replaced). Note: covers the interior and exteriors of Hampton Court, Kensington Palace and 'Buckingham House'. Provenance: E.E. Smith (ink inscribed verso of the frontispiece).

SUSSEX. The Leconfield Petworth Estate. [N.p.:] 1957. Folio, (374 x 231mm.) 5 folding colour maps and plans in rear pocket and numerous illustrations relating to the sale of 7,446 acres of the Leconfield Petworth Estate in West Sussex by the auctioneers Strutt & Parker, Lofts and Warner in July, 1957. (Mild toning.) Original grey card covers, black lettering to upper cover (wear to spine ends, spotting to covers). Note: held by the West Sussex record office but not by National Archives.

EROTICA. [Six printed panels of Chinese erotic scenes. N.p: circa 1900.] Folding sheet, (opening to 331 x 1905mm.) 8 mounted panels on one folding sheet, including 6 printed erotic scenes with hand-colouring and 2 text leaves. (Browning and light staining to margins, glue residue to verso.) Contemporary stained wooden boards (detached).

SAUL, Edward. An Historical and Philosophical Account of the Barometer, or Weather-Glass. London: A. Bettesworth and C. Hitch, 1735. Second edition, 8vo signed in 4s (196 x 113mm.) 1p. publisher's advertisements to rear, decorative initial and ornament. (Occasional, minor soiling, browning, marginal loss to rear leaves, lacking blanks.) 20th century black morocco-backed paper-covered boards, green morocco lettering piece to the spine (replaced endpapers).

ALKEN, Henry. Illustrations to Popular Songs. London: Thomas M'Lean, Repository of Wit and Humour, 1823. First edition, oblong folio (251 x 354mm.) Frontispiece, 1p. 'Address', 42 hand-coloured captioned plates with tissue-guards. (Some offsetting, marginal browning, occasional minor soiling to plate margins, crease to last plate, frontispiece loose.) Original boards, later morocco lettering piece to upper cover (neatly rebacked, endpapers replaced, soiling to boards).
