Single-Owner Collections

An extensive collection of Victorian and later dog licences dating from the late 1860s to the 1980s, each of printed paper/card with ink-written details of area and owner, including an example detailed to Lieutenant Colonel Frederick William Burroughs, all within two albums, together with a book 'Licences and Related Ephemera of Great Britain' by R.H. Champion, E.J. Hitchings and E.A. Hall. Note: Lieutenant Colonel Frederick William Burroughs (1831-1905) served throughout the Crimean War and was present at the Battle of Alma and the Battle of Balaclava, commanding the left centre company of his regiment, on which Kinglake bestowed the name of 'The Thin Red Line'. Two rare late 19th century tooled red leather game hunting ledgers/registers relating to Red Rice near Andover, Hampshire, and probably the property of Red Rice House and park, one album relating to shooting, the other to fishing, detailing the estate's hunting at home and away, with entries circa 1881, 1882 and 1883 mentioning the Best family name until taken over by the Grantley family in the 1900s, entries continue to 1942, detailed with numbers, names and types of animals hunted. An early 20th century blue leather and part cloth bound game hunting ledger/register belonging to James M. Carnegie (1908-1985), given to him by his father Lancelot D. Carnegie (1861-1933), part-filled with ink-written hunting records from 1928 to 1938, some with photographic inserts, including Forebank House and Kinnaird Castle.
