Photographic frontispieces, occasional illustrations. (Mild toning.) Original blue cloth, dust-jackets (occasional, minor chipping, adhesive residue to rear panel of all dust-jackets) (24).

AUSTEN, Jane. Two Chapters of Persuasion, printed from Jane Austen's Autograph. Oxford: at the Clarendon Press, 1926. 8vo (179 x 112mm.) 2pp. facsimile of Austen handwriting, the extra paper label to rear. (Mild toning.) Original cloth-backed blue boards, paper label to spine, glassine dust-jacket. Note: comprises chapter 10 and 11 of 'Persuasion' as originally written. Later, Austen cancelled most of Chapter 10, replaced it with two new chapters with the original chapter 11 becoming chapter 12. Provenance: Brookes Friebolin (bookplate and ink name to front pastedown). - And three further volumes by Jane Austen (including 'Lady Susan', 1925, 8vo) (4).

Engraved title to volume 1, 1 folding engraved map, 124 engraved plates. (Browning, occasional spotting.) Later half-green morocco, gilt lettering to spines (minor rubbing). Provenance: 'Gregory' (bookplates to the front pastedowns). - And three further volumes relating to Kent (including Edward W. Brayley's 'The Beauties of England Wales', vol. 7, 1808, 8vo) (7).

MANUSCRIPT. - CHROMATICS. [A Hand-written manuscript written by David Ramsay Hay for the fourth edition of his book 'The Laws of Harmonious Colouring'. Edinburgh, 1838]. 47pp. manuscript, 8vo (241 x 195mm.) The unnumbered pages begin with an introduction and then four subsequent chapters on chromatics, colour theory and the analogy between colour and sound with sketches of the illustrations to be used, also includes in another hand 56pp. of legal indentures and contracts and a further 50pp. journal on poultry and poultry keeping dated 1852 and with numerous tipped-in illustrations relating to the birth of chicks, from the foetus onwards, and some printed excerpts relating to poultry bound-in. (Some notes and diagrams in ink and pencil to the pastedowns and preliminaries, browning within.) Contemporary half-calf (lacking spine).

AULD, William (publisher). The Rudiments of Architecture; or, the Young Workman's Instructor. Edinburgh: William Auld, 1773. 4to (252 x 196mm.) 42 engraved plates, 4 folding, including 13 unnumbered designs for houses, a 'Builder's Dictionary' to rear. (Lacking 7 plates, minor soiling, short closed tears to several leaves.) Contemporary half-calf, red morocco lettering piece to the spine, gilt titling (rubbing to extremities). Note: scarce. Provenance: Alexander Mackay (ink name to front-free endpaper).

HORSES. - Strickland FREEMAN. The Art of Horsemanship, Altered and Abbreviated, According to the Principles of the late Sir Sidney Medows. London: printed for the Author by W. Bulmer and Co., 1806. 4to (276 x 204mm.) Engraved silhouette portrait frontispiece, 15 plates by H.B. Chalon, 1 folding, numerous illustrations within the text. (Browning, some spotting to plate margins.) Later green half-morocco, five raised bands to spine with gilt lining and decoration to the bands, gilt lettering to the second compartment (rubbing to extremities). Note: the silhouette portrait of Sir Sidney Medows shows him on horseback, aged 90. Provenance: Charles B. Godman (bookplate to the front pastedown).

NETHERLANDS. - John Lothrop MOTLEY. The Life and Death of John of Barneveld… with a View of the Primary Causes and Movements of the Thirty Years' War. London: John Murray, 1874. 2 vols., first edition, 8vo (214 x 127mm.) 4 plates. (Mild toning.) Contemporary tree-calf, foliate gilt borders, five raised bands with black and red morocco lettering pieces to the second and third compartments, repeating gilt decoration to the rest (rubbing to extremities). Provenance: Hugh Perkins (bookplates to the front pastedowns).

RAILWAYS. - Nicholas WOOD. A Practical Treatise on Rail-Roads, and Interior Communication In General. London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, 1832. Second edition, 8vo (223 x 128mm.) Folding lithographed frontispiece, 7 further folding plates, 1 folding chart to rear. (Browning, small stamp to title, occasional spotting to plates.) Later half-morocco, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (replaced endpapers, replaced front and rear blanks). Note: an early book about railways, Nicholas Wood presented the case for their usefulness, and noted the progress made since the publication of his first edition seven years earlier.

RAILWAYS. - George HUGHES. The Construction of the Modern Locomotive. London: E. & F.N. Spon, 1894. First edition, 8vo (222 x 131mm.) Folding frontispiece, 2 folding plates, numerous illustrations. (Toning to margins, light occasional spotting.) Original maroon cloth, gilt lettering to spine and upper cover (bumped to extremities). - And twelve further volumes relating to railways and steam engines (including E.B. Ivatts's 'Railway Management at Stations', 1887, 8vo) (13).

Original cloth, paper title on-laid to spine (sunned and spotting to spine and upper cover, stain to upper cover). Note: a pirated edition, most likely published in 1904.

First edition, second impression, oblong folio (280 x 356mm.) 12 wood-engraved illustrations and 7 wood-engraved vignettes within the text by Leighton. (Mild toning.) Original green cloth, gilt lettering (browned to spine ends), dust-jacket (several tape repairs, minor chipping).

CHISWICK PRESS. - Heywood SUMNER. The Book of Gorley. London: the Chiswick Press, 1910. First edition, 4to (280 x 183mm.) Frontispiece, numerous illustrations. (Mild toning, remains of a bookplate to front pastedown.) Original blind-stamped green cloth, gilt titling to spine, t.e.g. (rubbing to spine ends). Provenance: P.H. Hood (bookplate to the front pastedown).

SCOTLAND. - David PARKER. [A hand-written history of the repair of the Cockburn tombstone in Henderland, Scotland. N.p: 1848]. 4pp. manuscript, small folio (274 x 199mm.) Title in red, blue and black, a drawing of the monumental stone over the grave of William Cockburn, a small watercolour drawing of a knight and 2pp. hand-written history of the repair of the tomb by William Murray, with the author's name at the end. (Browning). Original green cloth with gilt lettering to the upper cover (split to spine seam). Note: William Cockburn was a 'freebooter in the reign of James V' and was executed in 1529 by King James. His story inspired one of Walter Scott's ballads 'The Border Widows Lament'. Provenance: Henry Archibald Cockburn (bookplate to the front pastedown).

COMMON PRAYER, In English. The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments. London: Robert Barker, 1637. 8vo (162 x 104mm.) With the Psalms of David, engraved architectural title, triple borders ruled in red, initials, head and tail-pieces and red ruled borders throughout. (Lacking the general title, lacking front and rear blanks, heavily browned.) Later vellum boards (soiled, rear endpaper replaced). Note: collates A1-G4.
