LOT 3520
LONDON. Lord Mayor’s Show, or The 9th November. London: R. Miller, [1810.] 16mo (96 x 89mm.) 8 engraved hand-coloured plates with 4 lines of verse underneath commemorating the Lord Mayor’s Show. (Lacking first and last leaf, browning, slight dust-soiling.) Original engraved wrappers (browned, corner creasing, small minor stains). Note: rare. Originally created by King John in the early 13th century, the Lord Mayor’s Show was intended to help the Monarch persuade cosmopolitan Londoners and its Barons onto his side. It failed, but the ritual stuck and from 1751 it was always held on the 9th November. Since 1959 it is has been held on the second Saturday of November. In 1810, the Lord Mayor was Joshua Jonathan Smith. Provenance: Ann Upton (name inscribed verso upper wrapper).
