[GILPIN, William.] An Essay Upon Prints: Containing Remarks Upon the Principles of Picturesque Beauty. London: G. Scott for J. Robson, 1768. Second edition, 8vo (178 x 103mm.) (Spotting to front and rear leaves, toning.) 19th century blue half morocco over cloth-covered boards, green morocco lettering piece to the spine (spotting and fading to the cloth, light rubbing). Note: notable for introducing the idea of the 'picturesque' into 18th century art. Provenance: Minster Acres Library (bookplate to front pastedown). - And a further sixteen volumes on prints, books and art (including C.H. Hartshorne's 'The Book Rarities in the University of Cambridge', 1829, 8vo, and Joseph Cundall's 'A Brief History of Wood-Engraving', 1895, 8vo) (17).
