"MANTELL, Gideon (1790-1852). The Fossils of the South Downs. London: Lupton Relfe, 1822. First edition, 4to (305 x 240mm). Uncut, 4pp. list of subscribers, 41 plates and maps only (of 42), comprising 1 hand-coloured lithographed geological map, 40 aquatints (2 folding), extra-illustrated with 3 loosely-inserted small format original drawings of fossils, one on paper with watermark date '1834'. (Lacking plate III, frontispiece cut down and re-inserted, title, half-title and frontispiece spotted, some spotting to plates, creasing to the folding plates, plates XXI and XXII with tears to outer margins.) Modern cloth. Provenance: Lilian Houghton (signature); Leslie Beaconsfield Bristow (armorial bookplate). Note: ""...Mantell's first and in some respects most important book"" (Dean). Dean 40.
