MANTELL, Gideon. The Geology of the South-East of England. London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green & Longman. 1833. First edition, 8vo (214 x 133mm). Half-title, lithographic frontispiece, 5 lithographic plates (1 folding), 1 folding hand-coloured engraved map, wood-engraved title vignette and illustrations. (Light creasing to the folding plate, slight offsetting to the map). Contemporary diced calf (rebacked, modern endpapers). Note: Gideon Mantell (1790-1852) is now known for pioneering the scientific study of dinosaurs. The present work remains one of his best known and may be considered an important early milestone in the study of modern geology and palaeontology. Provenance: The Library Collection of the Late W. Leslie Weller MBE, DL, FSA.
