A 16th Century ebonized and verre églomisé table chest of two short and three long drawers, reputed to have belonged to Mary, Queen of Scots, the drawer fronts and sides with inset glass panels within ebonized astragals, backed with coloured papers and decorated with birds, leaves and flowers, mirrored hearts and stars, fitted with shaped drop handles, height approx 53cm, width approx 51cm, depth approx 24.5cm (alterations and restoration). Note: this chest appears to have once been in Whitby Museum and possibly sold in 1924 to raise funds for the present museum building. A Brief Account of a Tour Through Some Parts of Scotland by Robert Hunter Junr, published in 1839, states 'Holyrood house ... Here Mary Queen of Scots resided ...
