Photographs, Autographs and Ephemera

BURMA. An archive of approximately 138 manuscript letters from Major Bedford Hugh Nicholas McNeill to his 'darling' Monica Watkins, a secretary from Maidstone, Kent, written from India and Burma, circa 1943-1945, mostly 3pp. closely and neatly written aerogrammes, 19cm x 24.5cm, with circumspect detail McNeill writes of his life, but, unable to describe the military operations 'because I am in a special branch of the army', nevertheless incidental details slip out. In Burma, 'the Tommy-gun becomes your best friend', and the 'Japs have crucified white men and flogged them to death'. In India, it was more relaxed and he describes in detail how to make 'curry and rice'. He longs to receive more letters from Monica and is fulsome in his adoration of her, though has never met her. Occasionally he understands the fragility of their romance ('you're doing your war service by writing to a lonely man in Burma'). Note: Major McNeill received the Military Cross for his operations in Northern Burma. In August 1944, he led his company in capturing 18 Japanese bunkers ('pillboxes') which contributed to taking Myanmar from the Japanese.

ADVERTISING. A collection of advertising ephemera, including items advertising Vimto, Heinz Sweet Pickles, Crawfords, Cadburys, Schweppes and Pears' Soap, together with some cigarette cards and two books.

EPHEMERA. A group of seven Victorian/Edwardian St Valentine greetings cards with embossed and cut paper and applied chromolithographic details, together with a small group of ephemera and a scrap book with numerous mounted scraps and greetings cards.

PHOTOGRAPHS. An album containing approximately 64 cartes-de-visite and 6 cabinet-size photographs, the majority of German notables and family, including King and Queen of Saxony, Prince and Princess George of Saxony, Col. William Gordon Cumming, one of a dog called Mungo and a few of German towns.

PHOTOGRAPHS. A photograph album titled on the upper cover 'Chefoo, China', containing approximately 64 tipped-in photographs, the majority 9.5cm x 14cm.

PHOTOGRAPHS. Two albums containing approximately 204 small-format photographs of the P & O Chusan world cruise, including views of Bombay, Singapore, Colombo and Hong Kong, leaves 23.5cm x 16.5cm.

PHOTOGRAPHS. An album containing approximately 44 mounted photographs of a country house, circa 1890s, the photographs 10.5cm x 15cm, including a horse, pets, servants and interiors.

PHOTOGRAPHS. An album containing approximately 45 albumen-print photographs, circa 1880s, most photographs 19.5cm x 24.5cm, including ten images of Alexandria after the bombardment of the British Mediterranean fleet in July 1882, as well as views of Corfu, Vesuvius, Athens and Norway.

PHOTOGRAPHS. An album with olivewood covers containing approximately 36 black and white photographs of Palestine circa 1944, the photographs 11xm x 9cm, including views of street scenes, shopping in Jerusalem, soldiers of the Trans Jordan Forces and a Jaffa barber.

PHOTOGRAPHS. An album containing approximately 200 photographs, circa 1907-1930, the photographs 8cm x 10cm, including views of Ripon Falls and Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda, as well as views in Egypt, Greece and Italy.

ALBUM. A leather-bound commonplace book containing watercolours and other drawings, as well as literary scraps and original verse, early/mid-19th century, leaves 23.5cm x 18.5cm.

AUTOGRAPHS. A large collection of approximately 450 signed letters, photographs and postcards in 21 adhesive albums, the majority of television, sport and music interest, including Dudley Moore, Jack Lemmon, Spike Milligan, Tom Jones, Billy Fury, Princess Grace of Monaco, Seve Ballesteros, Patrick McGoohan, David Cassidy, Billy Joel, most dedicated to Irene or Tony.

AUTOGRAPHS. A collection of approximately 200 autographed photographs, most 25.5cm x 20cm, including Liza Minnelli, Barbara Windsor, Eli Wallach, Tony Curtis, John Mills, Jack Lemmon, Bette Davis, Donald Connor and Gale Storm, Richard Harris, and Constance Moore.

A collection of signed theatre programmes, collected by Laurie Butcher, the majority National Theatre or Shakespeare Company, generally multi-signed on cast pages, including Ian McKellen, Stephanie Beacham and others in 'Venice Preserv'd', David Bradley, Susan Lynch, Sarah-Jane Drummey and others in 'The Night Season'.

AUTOGRAPHS. A collection of autographs in three albums and loose, including some 1950s tennis players on leaves and postcards, Hugh Stewart, Lewis Hoad, Meryn Rose, Gardnar Mulloy, Rex Hartwig, other autographs include Liberace.

PHOTOGRAPHS. An album containing approximately 49 photographs, the majority of sporting interest but also including views of houses and Epsom horseracing, leaves 26.5cm x 36cm.
