An early 18th century marquetry inlaid walnut longcase clock, the eight day movement striking the hours on a bell via an internal countwheel mechanism, the brass 12-inch dial with silvered chapter ring, inscribed 'Fra.Gregg, Russell Street Covent Garden', framing a matt centre with silvered subsidiary seconds, date aperture with engraved surround and ringed winding holes, cornered with cast and pierced gilt mask and scroll spandrels, the case with all-over floral marquetry including flowers, urn and birds, the hood with moulded pediment and blind fretwork frieze above glazed door and turned columns, the rectangular trunk door with glazed oval lenticle and cross grain mouldings, the sides divided into panels with stringing, on a plinth base, height 207cm (some alterations and restoration), with pendulum, two weights and winding key. Note: Francis Gregg is a recorded London clockmaker. He was born circa 1677 and was apprenticed to John Clowes in 1691 through to 1698. He worked in Russell Street, Covent Garden, between 1711 and 1714, when he moved to St James, where he continued to work until 1729.
