Gill, 1778. 12mo (148 x 82mm.) 54 engraved plates. (Browning, 1 loose leaf, occasional small tear, marginal loss to frontispiece of King George.) Contemporary red morocco, a hound's tooth gilt border around a lozenge of foliate gilt, g.e. (light rubbing to extremities).

CONAN-DOYLE, Arthur. Through the Magic Door. London: John Murray, 1920. Reprint, signed on the title-page by Arthur Conan-Doyle, 8vo (187 x 123mm.) 16 plates. (Toning, occasional mild spotting, browning to front-free endpaper.) Original red cloth (spine seams split, sunning to spine, some discolouring to lower cover). Note: signed in ink 'Yours Sincerely, Arthur Conan-Doyle, Feb 28/23'.

OCCULT. - Richard SAUNDERS. Physiognomie, and Chiromancie, Metoposcopie, the Symmetrical Proportions and Signal Moles of the Body… with the Subject of Dreams Made Plain: Whereunto is Added The Art of Memory. London: by H. Brugis for Nathaniel Brook, 1671. Second edition ('very much enlarged'), folio (289 x 181mm.) 3 parts in 1, separate title to second part dated 1670, and 'A Treatise of the Moles of the Body' also dated 1670, engraved portrait frontispiece, 1 engraved plate, 3 full-page woodcuts and numerous smaller woodcut illustrations, 7pp. publisher's advertisements to rear, a prayer in manuscript to lower margin of p.50 in an early 18th century hand, 5pp. of manuscript notes to rear containing cabalistic tables, diagrams and correspondences, in the same early 18th century hand. (Frontispiece laid-down with minor loss to margins, marginal loss and chipping to many leaves due to marginal damp-damage, especially in part 1, browning, occasional spotting, marginal insect damage from R1-Bb2, tear with no loss to b2, lacking blanks and the 'Peroratio leaf', irregular pagination as normal.) Early 19th century blind-tooled morocco, black morocco lettering piece to the spine (some wear to spine, slight loss, remains of label to base of spine, endpapers replaced). Note: the manuscript notes to the rear are a transcription of chapter 22 of Henrich Cornelius Agrippa's 'Three Books of Occult Philosophy'. Richard Saunders studied hermeneutics and practised astrology and chiromancy. He was a friend of Elias Ashmole - to whom the book is dedicated- and was a part of astrologer William Lilly's circle. NUREMBURG CHRONICLE. - Hartmann SCHEDEL. [Liber Chronicarum. Nuremburg: Anton Koberger, 1493.] Leaf number LXXX, folio (450 x 311mm.) Single leaf, Latin text, 1 large woodcut of the town of Siena, Tuscany, several portrait woodcuts verso. (Toning, calligraphic annotation in ink to the margins, folding crease, browning.)

POPE, Alexander. The Works… in Six Volumes Complete with his Last Corrections, Additions and Improvements. London: C. Bathurst, 1788. 6 vols., 12mo (178 x 96mm.) Numerous engraved plates, an extra engraved portrait of Pope mounted on initial blank of volume 1. (Browning, spotting to preliminaries.) Contemporary mottled calf, red and green morocco lettering pieces to the spines (rebacked, some wear to spine of volume 2 and 6, rubbing). - And a further fourteen volumes (including Antoine-Joseph Dezallier de Argenville's 'Voyage Pittoresque de Paris', 1778, 12mo, and Ovid's 'Art of Love… together with his Remedy of Love') (20).

AFRICA. - Henry RUSSELL. The Ruin of the Soudan, Cause Effect and Remedy. London: Sampson Low, 1892. First edition, 8vo (214 x 131mm.) 11 plates, 2 folding maps, including the large linen-backed map to rear, being a facsimile of that drawn by General Gordon in 1874. (Toning, occasional spotting, stamp and name inscribed to title, inked reference number to initial blank.) Near contemporary red morocco over red cloth covers, black morocco lettering piece to the spine (rubbing to all extremities). Provenance: Tarcowie Institute (bookplate to the front pastedown). - And a further fifteen volumes relating to the Sudan, Egypt and General Gordon (including Count Gleichen's 'With the Camel Corps Up the Nile', 1888, 8vo) (16).

MILITARY. - E.W.C. SANDES. The Royal Engineers in Egypt and the Sudan. Chatham: the Institution of Royal Engineers, 1937. First edition, with a tipped in inscription from General Reginald Wingate, 8vo (239 x 153mm.) Portrait frontispiece, numerous photographic plates, 2 folding maps to rear. (Mild toning.) Original red cloth (lightly bumped spine ends), dust-jacket (toning, creasing at spine ends). Note: Reginald Wingate was Governor-General of the Sudan and sirdar of the Egyptian army from 1899-1916. He was the High Commissioner in Egypt from 1917-1920. The note reads ' 20. Nov. 1948, To Ethel Palmer, from her old friend, Reginald Wingate'. - And a further four volumes relating to the Royal Engineers (including Whitworth Porter's 'History of the Corps of Royal Engineers', 3 vols., 1889, 8vo) (5).
