BIBLE, In English. The Holy Bible Contayning the Old and New Testaments: Newly Translated out of the Originall Tongues and with the former Translations diligently compared and revised. London: John Feild [sic], 1660. 12mo (148 x 77mm.) Engraved title by William Vaughan, red ruled, OT only, last leaf T12. (Browning throughout, trimming to numerous headline words, lacking blanks, notes and annotation verso the endpapers, tape reinforcement to hinges.) Contemporary red morocco with fillet borders and volute tooling to covers, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (rubbing to extremities). [Herbert 671.] - And a further six related volumes (including 'Novum Testamentum' in Greek published by R. Norton, 1653, 12mo, a defective copy of John Knox's 'History of the Reformation of the Church of Scotland', 1644, 4to, and a defective variant of the 'Wicked Bible' published by Robert Barker, [1631], 8vo, which contains the 'not' of Exodus XX, verse 14) (7).

First edition, 4to (249 x 184mm.) Illustrations in the text, mounted colour plates illustrating Frederick A. Laing's 'Hieroglyphic Bible, Old Testament Stories'. (Toning, occasional light spotting.) Original buckram, pictorially stamped in gold and black (soiled to margins), cloth dust-jacket (slight rubbing).

ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT BOOK. The First Chapter of the First Epistle General of Saint Peter. Translated from the Authorized Version. [N.p.: circa 1900.] 4to (264 x 184mm.) Large illuminated initial, 6pp. of hand-written calligraphic text in black with verse numbers and line-breaks in red. (Toning, browning.) Contemporary red morocco with gilt initials to upper cover (a five-line ownership note in ink to front pastedown). - And a further ten illustrated volumes (including Lucy Wright's 'The Changed Guard' with 9 hand-coloured leaves, [circa 1874], 4to, and also 'Hymns for Holy Week and Easter from the Christian Year' by John Keble and illuminated by M. King, [n.d. circa 1870], 4to, and a bound 8pp. hand-written 'Selections from 'Little Comments on Great Texts' by 'Alan Junior'', [circa 1910], folio) (11).

BIBLE, In English. The English Hexapla, Exhibiting the Six Important English Translations of the New Testament Scriptures. London: Samuel Bagster, 1841. 4to (296 x 208mm.) Title in red and black, Greek text above with parallel English translations below from the different English versions. (Light spotting to preliminaries.) Contemporary half marbled calf over grey buckram-covered boards, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (some fading and spotting to the buckram, light rubbing). Provenance: Charles Longuet Higgins (bookplate to the front pastedown).

BIBLE, In English. The Holy Bible, Containing the Old Testament and the New, Newly Translated out of the Original Tongues and with the former translations diligently compared and revised. Oxford: at the Theatre, to be sold by Peter Parker, 1682. Folio (292 x 210mm.) Title ruled in red and black with engraved Royal Coat-of-arms to General and NT title, includes 'Book of Common Prayer' and Apocrypha, engraved frontispiece of Charles II, with 'The Whole Book of Psalm'. (Numerous loose leaves, text-block cracked, marginal paper repairs, particularly to frontispiece, browning, occasional soiling.) Contemporary red morocco, later red morocco lettering piece to the spine, g.e. (rebacked, tape reinforcement to hinges, endpapers replaced, heavily rubbed and discoloured). Provenance: Henry Streatfeild (ink name to title and bookplate to front pastedown). [Herbert 769 C].

ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT BOOK. - Margaret HART (illustrator). An Ancient Hymn on The Lord's Prayer. [N.p.: 1868.] 4to (239 x 203mm.) Calligraphic title in red, blue and gold, 16 leaves of card with calligraphic text within historiated borders and ornaments illuminated with silver and gold. (Recto of 1 card has offsetting of a large leaf, spotting to preliminaries and rear leaves, toning.) Contemporary red morocco, with gilt cross to upper cover within fillet borders and fleur-de-lys corner-pieces, gilt titling to spine, g.e. (rubbing to extremities).

JONES, Owen (illuminator). The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church. London: John Murray, 1845. 8vo (237 x 154mm.) Titles in red and black within gilt printed borders, initials, ornaments and 8 chromolithographed titles designed by Jones. (Damp-staining from title to p.xxxix, thereafter some browning, spotting, occasional marginal damp-stain.) Contemporary red morocco , gilt designs to covers and spines, g.e. (spine slightly darkened, endpapers replaced). Provenance: Lady Braye (gift inscribed to in ink on the front-free endpaper. - And a further volume (two copies of 'The Sermon on the Mount' illuminated by Alberto Sangorski, 1911, 4to) (3).

London: Samuel Bagster, 1827. 1 vol. in 2, 4to (250 x 186mm.) (Spotting to preliminaries and rear leaves, some corner creases, family histories in ink to preliminaries.) Contemporary red straight-grain morocco with gilt rectangles of three multiple fillets within gilt dentelle borders, g.e. (rubbing to extremities). Provenance: Pym family, Devon (genealogy in ink to initial blank, volume 1).

Half title and title in Greek and Latin, text in Greek. (Occasional mild spotting.) Contemporary marbled calf, trailing foliate gilt within gilt borders, red morocco lettering piece to the spine, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (light rubbing). Provenance: Charles Arthur Wynne Finch (bookplate to the front pastedown).

JONES, Owen (illuminator.) The Preacher. [London:] Longman & Co., 1849. 4to (278 x 194mm.) 18 chromolithographed plates after designs by Jones. (Spotting to margins and to front and rear blanks, a thin area of later hand-colouring to match endpapers on both hinges.) Original wooden boards carved in Gothic style, gilt turn-ins, g.e. Provenance: Edward Francis Searles, designer (bookplate to front pastedown).

JONES, Owen (illuminator.) The Sermon on the Mount. [London:] Longmans & Co., 1845. 4to (162 x 115mm.) 16 chromolithographed leaves after designs by Jones. (Toning, minor spotting to front and rear blanks, faded name to front-free endpaper.) Contemporary morocco blind-tooled, upper and lower covers with quatrefoil vellum onlays, g.e. (some fading to the onlays, rubbing to extremities). Provenance: Florence Louisa Barry (name inscribed on front-free endpaper).

BINDING. - [Henry Noel HUMPHREYS.] The Miracles of Our Lord. London: Longman & Co., 1848. 8vo (165 x 117mm.) 16 chromolithographed leaves. (2 leaves loosening, lacking the illuminators remarks.) Original black gutta percha binding with designs of Jesus's miracles, g.e. (minor cracks to binding). - And a further three gutta percha bindings (including 'The Parables of Our Lord', 1845, 8vo) (4).

BINDING. - Henry Noel HUMPHREYS. A Record of the Black Prince. London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, 1849. 8vo (188 x 125mm.) Title in red and black, gothic letter, 6 chromolithographed illustrations. (Browning to preliminaries, toning.) Original black gutta percha binding with the Black Prince's coat of arms to covers, g.e. (slight adhesive residue to endpapers).

BIBLE, In Hebrew. Libri Iehosuah Iudicum, Samuelis, et Regum Hebraicè: cum interlineari versione Xantis Pagnini. [Leiden:] Christophe Plantin, 1611. 8vo (198 x 117mm.) Printer's device to title, text in Hebrew with interlinear Latin translation by Xantis Pagnini. (Browning, minor soiling to title, blanks replaced.) Late 18th century calf with later brown morocco lettering piece to the spine (rubbing to extremities). Note: rare. Taken from the text of the Plantin Polyglot, this is volume 2 of the Plantin translation of the Bible into Hebrew, containing four books from the Old Testament. - And a further twenty-two volumes of religious works in Hebrew, mostly 19th and 20th century (23).

BIBLE, In English. The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments: Translated out of the Original Tongues; and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. London: George Eyre and Andrew Strahan, 1806. 4to (278 x 212mm.) Hand-drawn genealogical history of the Wilberforce family on the preliminaries and rear-endpaper, a folding 3pp. hand-written note by William Wilberforce's son, also called William, tipped-in to the front-free endpaper. (Browning.) Contemporary straight-grain morocco, gilt dentelles within ruled borders, g.e. (rubbing to extremities, marks to lower cover). Note: in the hand-written note William Wilberforce's son writes 'Copy of entries in family Bible commenced in my father's handwriting and continued in my own'. He goes on to describe the genealogical table that is verso the front-free endpaper. The note covers the family from William Wilberforce's [the elder] parents down until the 1870's. In various hands the genealogical table itself dates until a marriage in 1914. Provenance: Margaret Anne Babington (gift inscribed to by 'Mr. Gisborne'; John Garton Sargent (gift inscribed to by his godmother Mrs. Babington). - And a further ten volumes relating to William Wilberforce (including 'Novum Testamentum Syriacè', 1816, 4to' with William Wilberforce's bookplate to the rear pastedown and a gift inscription to him from the editor, Samuel Lee. The lot also includes Wilberforce's 'A Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System of Professed Christians in the Higher and Middle Classes', 1803, 8vo, and also 'The Correspondence of William Wilberforce', 2 vols., 1840, and 'Letters to W. Wilberforce' by Amicus Protestans, 1822, 8vo, and a framed lithograph of Marden Park, the family residence) (11).

NUREMBURG CHRONICLE. - Hartman SCHEDEL. [Das Buch der Chroniken: Nuremburg: Anton Koberger, 1493.] Leaf number CCXXXVIII, folio (410 x 270mm.) Single leaf, German text, 3 woodcut illustrations recto and verso, later hand-colouring. (Tear to lower edge, paper repair to recto). Leaf framed within double-glazed glass in a Hogarth style frame (crack to glass). Note: the woodcut shows John Wycliffe. - And a further four framed illustrations (to include a copy of a portrait in oil of William Tyndale) (5).

THEOLOGY. - John BERRIDGE. A Collection of Divine Songs, Designed chiefly for the Religious Societies of Churchmen in the Neighbourhood of Everton, Bedfordshire. London: 1760, 8vo (166 x 96mm.) (Damp-staining to margins throughout, pp. xv-xxii excised, p.103 torn, soiling, browning, numerous verses with hand-drawn redaction, annotations, three rear leaves excised.) Contemporary calf (rubbed). Note: John Berridge's copy. Soon after this book was published Berridge had the work suppressed. In 1785 he brought out 'Sion's Song' to replace it. In this copy Berridge has made emendations to nearly every page. Provenance: John Berridge, Anglican evangelist and hymnist (name inscribed to front pastedown). - And a further eleven volumes relating to religion (including P. Doddridge's 'The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul', 1792, 8vo, and a defective copy of I. Watkins's 'Scripture History' [n.d. circa 1822], 16mo, and 'The Works of the Rev. John Newton', 1816, 5 vols. [of 6], 8vo) (12).

WOODFORD, Samuel. A Paraphrase Upon the Psalms of David. London: R. White, 1667. 4to (194 x 147mm.) Engraved frontispiece by David Loggan, 'Table of Psalms' to rear. (Toning, occasional browning.) Contemporary Spanish calf, red morocco lettering piece to the second compartment of spine, elaborate gilt to the rest (mottled wear to covers, minor loss to top of spine). Provenance: Marques of Tweeddale (bookplate 'Spare Nought' to front pastedown). - And a further ten theological volumes (including a heavily annotated copy of Benjamin Camfield's 'A Serious Examination of the Independent's Catechism', 1688, 8vo, and George Whitefield's 'Fifteen Sermons Preached on Various Important Subjects', 1795, 8vo) (11).
