POLAR EXPLORATION. - Robert Falcon SCOTT. The Voyage of The 'Discovery'. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1905. 2 vols., second impression, signed by Ernest Shackleton on the half-title, 8vo (238 x 157mm.) 2 photogravure frontispieces with tissue-guards, 12 colour plates based on watercolour paintings by E.A. Wilson, 5 double-paged plates, numerous plates, 5 maps, including 2 folding in rear pockets, publisher's slip tipped-in to volume 1. (Some spotting to the folding maps, spotting to preliminaries and occasionally within text.) Original blue cloth with gilt medallions to upper covers, gilt lettering to spines, t.e.g. (light rubbing to extremities, some fading to cloth and to gilt lettering of volume 1). Note: the inscription reads: 'With kind regards from E. Shackleton in remembrance of Dundee 1906'. Dundee, known for its shipbuilding, is where the 'Discovery' was designed and built. The ship returned to Dundee in 1986 where it has since been a tourist attraction. It's also possible that the inscription refers to Shackleton's unsuccessful bid, in 1906, to become M.P. for Dundee.
