[WARD, John]. Information Relative to New-Zealand for the Use of Colonists. London: John W. Parker, 1839. First edition, 12mo (221 x 130mm.) Folding map, 1pp. publisher's advertisement to rear. (Toning, marginal damp-stain to most leaves.) Original wrappers (upper cover detached and with paper repair), later green buckram with red morocco lettering piece to spine (a few marks to upper cover). Note: contains information on New Zealand's climate, soil, natural history and produce as well as a section on the native character and 'their capacity for civilization'. In 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and Maori chiefs. Provenance: G. & N. Ingleton (bookplate to the front pastedown of the later cloth).

[BRACK, Wencelaus]. Vocabularius rerum. Spira: [Konrad Hist.], 1509. 4to (206 x 137mm.) Title with woodcut colophon, Gothic letter, 3pp. 'Tabula', text in Latin and German. (Browning to margins, occasional annotation in Latin.) 19th century calf-backed marbled paper-covered boards (upper cover detached, loss to spine, rubbing). Note: signatures a2, b6, c4, d6, e4, f8, g4, h4, i6, k4; dated to colophon at rear, K4. Intended for students of Latin, Brack's work is now considered an important source of German lexicography.

COMMON PRAYER, In English. The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church. London: by John Bill, Christopher Barker, Thomas Newcomb et al, 1678. 8vo (163 x 105mm.) Engraved head-pieces, engraved Royal Arms emblem to the last leaf U8. (Lacking initial blank, decorative pin-hole pattern to front and rear endpapers, browning.) Contemporary red morocco with triple gilt borders and floral gilt cornerpieces surrounding a gilt design to both covers, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (surface wear and minor loss to rear cover, rubbing to all extremities). Note: collates A-U8.

BIBLE, In English. The New Testament of Our Lord Jesus Christ Translated out of Greeke by Theod. Beza. London: Christopher Barkar [sic], 1576. 8vo (157 x 96mm.) Title with woodcut vignette, engraved initials and ornaments, numbered leaves. (Browning, occasional spotting, some leaves with marginal damp-staining, lacking leaf Ppp8, small paper repairs to Pp2-Pp4 and to Eee2 and Mmm, lacking last three leaves Mmm2-Mmm4.) 17th century calf (lacking covers). Note: this is the first edition of Tomson's revision of the Geneva New Testament and became the final and popular form of the Geneva Testament. [Herbert 146].

MANUSCRIPT. [A hand-written compendium of craft and household advice. N.p: circa 1795-1828.] 450pp. manuscript, 8vo (198 x 174mm.) Numbered pages in a single legible hand with hundreds of pieces of practical and medical advice. (Browning, occasional spotting, several gatherings loose.) Contemporary morocco over marbled paper covers (boards detached, heavily rubbed). Note: apparently gleaned from various sources over a period of time, the manuscript includes detailed advice on how to make various shades of ink, including Indian ink, as well as 'sympathetic' or 'secret inks'. There is plentiful advice on preventing rust, removing spotting from paper, cleaning marble and various crafts. There are many recipes and methods of preservation, including a 'cheap diet for the poor'. But also extensive notes on 'how to make puff paste for all sorts of pastry'. The recipes also relate to health, including cures for whooping cough ('take one glass of the best rum') as well as more ambitious cures for cancer that involve leeches, and a cure for deafness that involves smoking strong tobacco ('fill the nostrils… and hold tight').
