AFRICA. - Paul B. DU CHAILLU. A Journey to Ashango-Land: and Further Penetration into Equatorial Africa. London: John Murray, 1867. First edition, 8vo (223 x 135mm.) 3pp. a.l.s. from du Chaillu to a 'Mrs Muller' loosely inserted, 23 plates, including frontispiece and title-page vignette, folding map to rear, 32pp. publisher's advertisements. (Some spotting to the map, upper joint weakening.) Original purple cloth with gilt vignette of the plate 'Prisoner of Nchogo' to upper cover, gilt lettering to spine (some sunning to spine, bumped to spine ends). Note: the letter reads 'Dear Mrs Muller, luck seems to turn against me. On my return this evening from a dinner party I found your kind letter and invitation to come and spend Sunday at Ridge-hurst waiting for me. Unfortunately I have a previous engagement to go and spend Sunday in the country, nothing could have delighted me more than to come and to pay you a visit and meet Miss McMurdo, alas I cannot do it. It was so kind of you to think of the poor forlorn stranger. It is just like you. With kindest regards to yourself and Mr Muller and to Miss McMurdo, believe me, yours very sincerely, P.B.
