TRAVEL. - Thomas STEVENS. Around the World on a Bicycle. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1894. 2 vols., first editions, 8vo (218 x 133mm.) Chromolithograph frontispiece of the author on a bicycle and a wood-engraved portrait frontispiece, tissue-guards, numerous illustrations. (Toning, corner creasing to a few leaves at rear of first volume.) Original pictorial cloth (bumped to upper cover of volume 2, rubbing to extremities). Note: volume 1 is subtitled 'From San Francisco to Teheran' and volume 2 is 'From Teheran to Yokohama'. Stevens rode a large-wheeled Ordinary, also known as the Penny Farthing. He was expelled from Afghanistan, refused entry into Siberia but finally estimated that he had travelled 13,500 miles. He was the first person to cycle the globe on a bicycle. The bicycle itself was preserved by the Pope Company. However, in the 1940's it was donated as scrap metal to help the war effort (2).
