HARDY, Thomas. The Wessex Novels. London: Osgood, McIlvaine and Co., 1895-1897 and London & New York: Harpers & Brothers, 1898. 17 vols. only (of 18), 8vo (198 x 135mm.) Engraved frontispieces by H. Macbeth Raeburn to all volumes. (Some spotting to preliminaries and occasionally to fore-edges.) Near contemporary blue half-morocco, the spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third the others with repeating floral gilt motifs (rubbing to extremities). Note: vols. 1-9, 13-15 and vol. 17 are published by Osgood, McIlvaine and Co., vols. 10-12 and 16 are published by Harpers & Brothers 1898. Provenance: Lady Crewe (a gift inscription in ink on front free endpaper to 'Margaret, Countess of Crewe' from Mr. and Mrs. Francis Lawley, the journalist and Liberal politician who had to resign office following a financial scandal. A tipped-in letter from Francis Lawley asks whether Lord Crewe has received the gift of these seventeen volumes, having clearly heard nothing three months after dropping them off with his wife).
