SMALL CRAFT VOYAGES. Up the Elbe, and on to Norway by Mr. Nihil. London: Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, [n.d. but circa 1865.] 8vo (195 x 120mm.) (Light browning and spotting.) Original cloth blocked in gilt and blind, extremities bumped and scuffed, head and foot of spine chipped with some loss and a fragment secured with adhesive tape, spine darkened, slightly soiled). Provenance: George Naish (ink inscription to title-page 'From the collection of George Naish, 1978'). - And forty-seven other volumes relating to small craft voyages (including: 'Hunt-Room Stories and Yachting Yarns by the author of Across Country and Fair Diana'. London: Chapman and Hall, 1884). Note: George Naish was the son of a keen maritime archaeologist and joined the National Maritime Museum in 1935, in 1940 he joined the Royal Naval Volunteer becoming lieutenant-commander on transferring on demobilisation to the Royal Naval Reserve, in 1947 Naish became Honorary Secretary to the Society for Nautical Research and attained the ranks of Keeper and Historical Consultant at the Maritime Museum. Provenance: The Michael Gilkes Collection (48).

TIPHYS, [Charles Penrose]. Practical Canoeing; a Treatise on the Management & Handling of Canoes. London: Norie & Wilson, 1883. First edition, 8vo (220 x 133mm.) Frontispiece, 4 full-page plates, illustrations, 18pp. advertisements and map at rear. (Light browning, occasional spotting or soiling.) Original brown pictorial cloth blocked in black and gilt (extremities bumped and scuffed, rebacked with majority of old spine laid down, reinforced with touches of recolouring, some damp staining, endpapers browned). Provenance: George Naish (inscription signed and dated 'George Naish, Portsmouth, 5-5-44' to preliminary blank with further inscription 'From the collection of George Naish 1978' to reverse of frontispiece); The Michael Gilkes Collection.
