RUNCIMAN, Walter. 'Sunbeam II.' In 1932 with Some Reminiscences of Sailing Ship Captains [The Personal Log]. Newcastle upon Tyne: Andrew Reid & Company, Limited, 1933. 4to (241 x 180mm.) Photographic frontispiece, 3 photographic plates, 24 photographic illustrations. (Light browning, marginal tear with loss to pp.99-100.) Original cloth blocked in gilt (extremities lightly bumped, spine faded, damp stained). Together with an a.l.s. by Runciman addressed to Mr Warington Smyth dated 'Aug 11th 1933', reading 'Your very kind letter came to me when on the Solent and ought to have been answered when received but I was so much engaged at the time it has been overlooked. I think I handed it to Walter… Walters schooner 'Altair' is a great success. He has gone to Scotland with her… Is the cove where you are suitable for 'Sunbeam II' she draws 17.3 and is 195 feet overall and 152 feet waterline… Thanks again in abundance for your kindness, yours sincerely Runciman'. - And a typed compliments slip on Fernwood House headed paper 'With the Author's Compliments'. Note: this volume covers the cruise to Syra and Constantinople from 8th April to May 19th with a crew of 25 and a second short cruise to Denmark from 8th June to August 25th. Original cloth (extremities lightly bumped, split to head of spine, spine slightly browned), dust-jacket (chipped and torn with loss, some repaired tears, creased and backstrip slightly browned). Provenance: Harry Vandenvelle (presentation inscription from Winifred Brown 'Wishing Harry Vandenvelle the best of luck, fair winds, and good passages' to front-free endpaper); Michael Gilkes (bookplate to front pastedown). Together with two a.l.s by Winifred Brown addressed to Commander Vandervelle, one hurriedly discussing her book and autographing it for him, 'Please excuse haste, but everybody here is rushing out to the submarine that has gone down just outside'. - And two other sailing volumes (comprising: Irving JOHNSON.
