Note: Mexican cartoonist Arias Bernal was known for ridiculing political leaders so in 1942 the U.S. government invited him to Washington and commissioned him to create editorial cartoons to promote the Allied war effort. - And a further illustrated volume ('Omar, volume 1, number 1, a Quarterly Collection of the Drawings of David Omar White', 1967, folio) (2).

Numerous erotic illustrations after Tom Poulton. (Mild toning.) (Name inscribed in most volumes up until 1965, and not inscribed from 1966 onwards, and not inscribed in volumes 1937, 1955, 1959, 1961 and 1963, price-clipped in only seven volumes, being 1948, 1957-1959, 1963, 1966 and 1971, some colouring done in only 5 volumes, being 1940(?), 1943, 1955, 1957 and 1960, and the 'Magic Painting' is neatly or partially done in most copies between 1960-1968 but not done in 1966 and 1968, occasional spotting and browning.) Original red cloth (4), pictorial card covers (8), or pictorial boards (75) (inner hinge of '1936' weakened and dust-soiling to upper cover, lower part of spine panel of '1942' and '1944' missing, earlier volumes rubbed to extremities), dust-jacket for the 70th anniversary edition. (Lacking the map of 'Nova Francia' and the plate of the Jesuit martyrs, light to moderate browning, minor soiling to title, illegible ink name to title, lacking blanks.) Near contemporary calf (rebacked, endpapers replaced, extremities rubbed). Note: Du Creux never visited Canada but compiled this history from Jesuit Relations, the annual reports that Jesuit missionaries filed with their superiors in France. (Lacking all maps and leaf [1] l4, marginal insect damage to [2] f6-h2, marginal damp-staining, some leaves with corner loss, blanks replaced.) 18th century cat's paw calf, red morocco lettering piece (extremities rubbed, minor scuffing). Note: the second edition of Ptolemy and edited by Michael Villanovanus, better known as 'Servatus' (1511-1553). Provenance: Jose de Palacio y Vitery (name-plate to front pastedown).

Title with engraved printer's device, 4 engraved maps within the text, woodcut initials and decorations. (Lacking an additional title-page and 59 maps and 18 text leaves, lacking also the double-paged 'Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descripto', intermittent spotting, blanks replaced.) 20th century vellum, black lettering to spine. Note: retains the maps for Germany, Hungary, Rome and Iran.

Title with woodcut showing God's creation of the heavens and the earth, 3 double-page woodcut views, numerous woodcut illustrations in the text. (Lacking all maps but 'Bohemia', lacking numerous plates and over 80 text leaves, title loose with marginal repairs, several loose leaves, large tears to 1 woodcut, damp-staining.) Contemporary boards (loss to spine, worn).

Engraved allegorical additional title in an architectural frame, letterpress title in red and black, 1 engraved plate, 20 engraved illustrations in the text. (Lacking all maps, intermittent browning and spotting, marginal damp-staining.) Contemporary vellum, manuscript lettering to spine (spine panel cracked, repair to top of spine). Note: considered to be the first naval history. Provenance: Louis Bardon (bookplate to front pastedown); Cesare Malfatti (bookplate to front-free endpaper).

Latin text, double-column, colophon to rear. (Significant loss to title and some text loss to first 9 leaves, and last 25 leaves, damp-staining throughout, significant insect damage.) Contemporary vellum (text-block detached, worn). Note: publishing details from colophon. Although known as work that developed the field of moral theology, the 'Manuale Confessariorum' is also appreciated as an early work on economics.

Note: the first unabridged edition in one volume, published just after Johnson's death.
