Note: comprises 'Northern Lights', 'The Subtle Knife' and 'The Amber Spyglass'. CHURCHILL, Winston S. The Collected Works of Sir Winston Churchill. London: The Library of Imperial History, 1973-1976. 34 vols. Limited edition, this being number 291 of 3000 sets of the Centenary Edition, 8vo (232 x 145mm.) Numerous illustrations. Original vellum, the Churchill coat-of-arms in gilt to upper covers, gilt lettering to spines, g.e., green slipcases (small knock to slipcase of volume 4 of 'The Second World War', slight variation in tone to the vellum). Note: includes a limitation bookplate for each volume. It was a significant publishing endeavour and 3000 sets were intended but the publisher was declared bankrupt before completing the project, so less than 2000 sets are in existence (34).

Half-titles, 7 photogravure portraits with tissue-guards, including 2 frontispieces, 24 maps (20 folding), numerous illustrations by Angus McNeill in the text, 30pp. publisher's advertisements to rear of volume 1. (Moderate spotting to front and rear leaves and intermittent throughout, and to fore-edge, small marginal loss to pp.313-316 of volume 1, toning.) Original black cloth, gilt design of a gunboat to upper covers, and the Mahdi's tomb in gilt to the spines (rubbed to extremities) Note: Churchill's second book, of which only 2000 copies were printed. Second state, having the 'missing' quotation mark on p.459 of volume 2 (2).

Original blue cloth, blind-stamped and gilt design to upper cover (rubbed and bumped to extremities, discolouring to margins, small crease to spine). Note: Ensor travelled from Cairo to the oasis at Darfour while surveying a route for a railway line. Provenance: A.R. Turner (bookplate to front pastedown).

TRAVEL. - Edmund SPENCER. Travels in Circassia, Krim Tartary, &c. including a Steam Voyage Down the Danube, from Vienna to Constantinople and round the Black Sea. Half-titles, 2 hand-coloured lithographed frontispieces, 1 folding river map, 1 folding chart laid down on linen, 2 lithographed plates with tissue-guards, numerous woodcut illustrations. (Light spotting to preliminaries and rear leaves, heavier to titles and verso of the chart, and to plate margins.) Near contemporary beige half-calf, black morocco lettering pieces to the spine (occasional nicks to spine). Provenance: P. Stuart (ink inscribed to front pastedowns) (2).

TRAVEL. - Xavier Hommaire de HELL. Travels in the Steppes of the Caspian Sea, the Crimea, the Caucasus, &c. London: Chapman and Hall, 1847. First English edition, 8vo (206 x 121mm.) Frontispiece after J.W.M. Turner, tissue-guard. (Toning, occasional spotting to preliminaries.) Original green cloth, blind-tooled with gilt design to upper and spine, g.e. (mark to lower cover). Note: initially began as a geological expedition, the book with considerable contribution from Xavier's wife, became a more ethnographic and sociological work on the people and institutions of Southern Russia and the neighbouring regions. Provenance: William F. St. Leger (Kingstown School prize bookplate to the front pastedown).

London: John Murray, 1823. First English edition, 8vo (213 x 122mm.) Aquatint frontispiece, 1 aquatint plate, 2 engraved plates, 2 lithographed maps (1 folding), appendix, index. (Offsetting from plates, large paper repair to p.253, 2 corner creases, browning, occasional spotting, small repairs with no loss and creasing to folding map.) Contemporary black half-morocco, red morocco lettering piece to the second compartment, repeating foliate decoration to the rest (rubbing to extremities, head of spine and inner joint neatly repaired).

TRAVEL. - J.T. JAMES. Journal of a Tour in Germany, Sweden, Russia, Poland, during the years 1813 and 1814. London: John Murray, 1817. 2 vols., second edition, 8vo (214 x 127mm.) 12 uncoloured aquatint plates by I. Clark after designs by the author. (Browning to plates, occasional spotting.) Contemporary diced calf, gilt borders, red morocco lettering pieces to the second and fifth compartments, repeating gilt design to the rest (spine seam and inner joint splitting in volume 2, rubbing to extremities). Note: James was an Oxford student and tutor when he took this tour and his travels took him through Russia just after the burning of Moscow and occupation by the French army (2).

CHANDLER, Richard. Travels in Asia Minor: or, An Account of a Tour Made at the Expense of the Society of Dilettanti. Dublin: R. Marchbank, 1775. 8vo (199 x 116mm.) 1pp. publisher's advertisement to rear. (Small marginal loss to p.xvii, f.f.e.p. loosening, occasional browning.) Contemporary calf, red and black morocco lettering pieces to the spine (rubbing to extremities, some loss to base of spine). - And a related volume (Richard Chandler's 'Travels in Greece', 1776, 8vo). Note: in the preface Chandler mentions spending several months in Athens and making 'a choice collection of ancient marbles, now… in the possession of the society'. Provenance: Marcus Gage (ink name to the title page).

(Mild toning, crease to rear blank.) Original card wrappers bound-in, contemporary green half-morocco, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (rubbing to extremities). Note: includes the illustrated tourist guide for the 'Great Eastern Railway', 'North Eastern Railway', 'Great Western Railway', 'London-Brighton and South Coast Railway', 'London Chatham & Dover Railway', 'London and North Western Railway', 'London and South Western Railway', 'Midland Railway' and 'South Eastern Railway'.

Later cloth-backed paper-covered boards, paper label to spine (endpapers replaced, some soiling to covers). Note: attributed to Alexander Fisher who is listed in Appendix 1 as the assistant surgeon. - And a related volume (James Prior's 'Narrative of a Voyage in the Indian Seas in the Nisus Frigate', [1820], 8vo) (2).

Note: Pearce also wrote works on Cicero, and, towards the end of Isaac Newton's life, he helped him with chronology.
