BIBLE, In English. The Holy Bible Containing the Old Testament and the New, Newly Translated out of the Original Tongues and with Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. Oxford: John Baskett, 1717-1716. 2 vols., folio, signed in 6s (522 x 312mm.) Title and 'Kalender' in red and black, engraved illustration of Clarendon building in Oxford by G. Vander Gucht on title, additional engraved title by Du-Bose, numerous engraved head and tailpieces and initials after Thornill, Cheron, Laguere and others, NT with separate title dated 1716 and engraved illustration depicting the Annunciation, including the Book of Psalms. (Lacking initial blanks [*2] and (possibly?) blank to rear of OT, Qqqq4, a tear to Aaaa6, marginal loss to Kk3 and Qq3, marginal tear to Nn1, some leaves heavily browned, occasional marginal damp-stain, at Qqq-Zzz2 damp-stain affecting text and also at Gggg2-Hhhh1, corner loss to Ppp1, many gatherings loose or loosening.) Contemporary half-morocco boards (lacking spine, worn). Note: known as the 'Vinegar' Bible due to the misprint of 'vinegar' for 'vineyard' above Luke XX; OT ends after Apocrypha at Qqqq3 and NT ends at Y4; Baskett's intention was to make a large and beautiful Bible that could be used in the pulpit, or shown in the homes of the aristocracy and perhaps for this reason the typographical errors were overlooked. Paris: Alexandre Jombert Jeune, 1783-1787. 3 vols. (in 4). Third edition, folio (362 x 232mm.) Engraved vignettes to titles, 3 engraved illustrations in the text, 1 folding chart, 1 folding genealogie. (Browning, occasional spotting, name inscribed to title of volume 2.) Contemporary brown calf, two morocco lettering pieces to the second and third compartments of the spines, floral gilt to the rest (loss to spine ends of volume 2, surface rubbing to all covers) (4).

XX and XXI (only), folio (384 x 269mm.) 50 chromolithographed caricatures. (Spotting to titles and preliminaries, some loss to f.f.e.p. of volume XX.) Contemporary green cloth, gilt lettering to upper covers, g.e. (damp-staining to all covers) (2).

Frontispiece, introduction, 17 plates with accompanying leaf of descriptive text. (Browning, frontispiece with marginal closed tear, one descriptive leaf with large closed tear, soiling to pastedowns.) Original red cloth-backed boards (worn). - And a related volume (volume IV of 'The Temple of King Sethos I at Abydos', edited by Alan H. Gardiner, 1958, folio) (2).

London: John Bowyer Nichols and Son, 1822-1830. 2 vols., folio (487 x 187mm.) 39 engraved plates, including 3 hand-coloured, numerous illustrations within the text. (Browning, occasionally heavy and offsetting, a loose leaf in volume two with loss, occasional spotting.) 20th century maroon cloth, gilt lettering to spine, g.e. (some fading, endpapers replaced, a few marks). Provenance: Will Hopkinson (bookplate to initial blank of volume 1); Law Society (gift inscribed in ink on initial blank of volume 1, stamps to preliminaries). - And nine further volumes of related interest (including Treadway Russell Nash's 'Collection for the History of Worcestershire, 2 vols., 1782, folio) (11).

Title in red and black, 45 coloured lithographic plates, many double-page. (Stamps verso the plates and to front and rear leaves, toning.) Original green half-morocco, gilt lettering to upper cover and spine, g.e. (rebacked with original spine laid-down, lightly rubbed). - And two further atlases (including 'Blaeu's Atlas of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland', 1970, folio) (3).

CARY, [John]. Cary's New English Atlas; Being A Complete Set of County Maps, from Actual Surveys… On Which are Particularly Delineated Those Roads which were Measured by Order of the Right Honourable the Postmaster-General. London: J. Cary, 1809. Folio (544 x 329mm.) Engraved double-page title, 'Contents' list on the front pastedown, 46 engraved maps on 44 sheets each with contemporary hand-colouring, 40pp. index to rear. (Maps with the county name in ink to the margins, some spotting to margins, a crease to the 'England' map, nearly half the maps with some marginal damp-staining, title loose.) Original half-calf (upper cover detached, heavily rubbed). Note: all the maps are dated between 1801 and 1809.

CRESWELL, Keppel A.C. The Mosques of Egypt, from 21 H. (641) to 1365 H. (1946). Giza: The Survey of Egypt, 1949. 2 vols., folio (428 x 319mm.) 2 chromolithographed frontispieces, loosely inserted introduction leaf with preface dated 1954 (as issued), 243 photographic plates, including 26 in colour with tissue-guards, numerous in-text illustrations, 2 coloured multi-folding maps of Cairo and an index in rear pocket of volume 1. (Mild toning.) Original green blind-stamped morocco, gilt lettering to spines and upper covers (variant shade to volume 1 with rubbing to extremities and spine) (2).

Colour frontispiece of 'Flags of all the Nations', 56 colour maps, 70pp. index to rear. (A tear to f.f.e.p. and smaller one to title, pencil drawings verso of 'Sweden and Norway' map, browning, light spotting verso of the maps, occasionally to plate margins.) Original brown half-morocco, gilt lettering to upper and spine (rubbing to extremities, fading, seam split at top of spine).

FASHION. Revue de la Mode, Gazette de la Famille. Paris: Moniteur Universel et du Monde Illustré, 1875. Folio (386 x 257mm.) 48 hand-coloured wood-engraved plates, numerous illustrations. (1 plate loose with marginal loss, 3 plates with small tears, 1 with corner loss, browning, 1p. text torn.) Original red morocco-backed buckram boards, gilt lettering to spine (heavily rubbed).

Title in red and black, two columns, red ruled throughout, 2 engraved vignettes, historiated woodcut initials and ornaments, separate title for NT dated 1754, with apocrypha, tables and index to rear. (Marginal lower damp-stain from a-H6, tear to Iii2, small loss to Iii3, browning, occasional spotting and corner creasing, lacking front and rear blanks.) Early 19th century spine with royal gilt cypher of King George II, later cloth covers, g.e. (endpapers replaced, covers detached).

HERCULANEUM. - [Ottavio Antonio BAYARDI. Catalogo Degli Antichi Monumenti Dissotterrati Dalla Discoperta Citta de Ercolano, per Ordine della Maesta di Carlo re delle due Sicilie. Naples: Regia Stampera, 1755-1792.] Folio, (500 x 376mm.) A collection of 96 leaves from between 'Tavola' 9 and 58 of this work, comprising 43 engraved plates, including 1 double-page folding plate of an etching by Rocco Pozzi, numerous engraved illustrations, initials and ornaments. (Occasional soiling and chipping to margins.) 20th century brown half-morocco, paper label onlaid to spine (endpapers and blank leaves replaced). Note: mounted onto the front pastedown is a printed image of the title-page of the 1752 'Prodromo delle Antichita d'Ercolano' which was the preliminary study for this work published in quarto. The leaves bound here are from the main folio work that was published between 1755 and 1792 and came in nine volumes.

Engraved title within architectural border, 14 engraved text leaves of 'Tables des Divisions', 10 engraved maps with contemporary outline hand-colouring, 9 double-page. (Maps and leaves disbound, large tear with no loss to 'Le Duche de Pomeraine', browning, occasional chipping, marginal loss to 'Savage et de Piemont' map, paper repairs to verso of most maps, chipping and small tears to all text leaves). Disbound. Note: comprises maps of 'France', 'Provinces des Pays-Bas Catholiques', 'Savage et de Piemont', 'Le Comté de Haynaut', 'Le Duche de Pomeraine', 'L'Alsace', 'Les Dix-Sept Provinces des Pays-Bas', 'L'Empire D'Allemagne', 'Le Cours de la Riviere du Rhein' and 'Duché de Luxembourg'.
