Zurich: ?1548.] Loose-leaf (184 x 192mm to 306 x 194mm.) 17 loose leaves with woodcut initials and illustrations, some with later hand-colouring. (Non-consecutive pagination to leaves, some paper repairs to margins, one repair across the width of a leaf, some marginal damp-staining, browning, minor soiling.) Disbound. - And a further eight fragments of early and 17th century printing and a 15th century manuscript leaf in Latin (26).

SUSSEX. - William Durrant COOPER. The History of Winchelsea, one of the Ancient Towns Added to the Cinque Ports. London: John Russell Smith, 1850. First edition, 8vo (223 x 134mm.) Folding map as frontispiece, 10 plates, 1 folding, 12pp. of publisher's advertisements bound in at rear. (Some creasing to frontispiece, toning, stamps verso of title.) Original green cloth, blind-tooled, gilt lettering to spine (some fading, rubbing.) Provenance: Robert Hovenden (bookplate to front pastedown); Worthing Public Library (bookplate to front-free endpaper and rear pastedown). - And a further fourteen books on Sussex town (15).

SUSSEX. - Fred W.L. STOCKDALE (illustrator). A Concise Historical & Topographical Sketch of Hastings, Winchelsea, & Rye. London: for the proprietors, by P.M. Powell, [n.d. but circa 1817.] 19 engraved plates, tissue-guards. (Browning, occasional spotting, stamps verso of title.) 19th century half-calf, red morocoo lettering piece to the spine (slight rubbing, surface wear to spine). Provenance: West Sussex County Library (bookplates to the pastedowns). - And eleven further volumes relating to Hastings and St. Leonards (including 'The Latest Edition of the Hastings Guide', 1827, 8vo) (12).

CUNDALL, Joseph (publishers). A Booke of Christmas Carols, Illuminated from Ancient Manuscripts in the British Museum. London: Joseph Cundall, [n.d. but 1846.] 16 stiff card chromolithographed leaves drawn by John Brandard, illuminated with gold. (Toning.) Original maroon morocco, blind-tooled and gilt borders, gilt title to upper cover.

LONDON. - John NELSON. The History, Topography, and Antiquities of the Parish of St. Mary Islington, in the County of Middlesex. London: for the author by John Nichols and Son, 1811. 8vo (263 x 222mm.) 12 engraved plates, 1 folding survey of roads and footpaths, extra-illustrated with 8 tipped-in lithographed plates and 1 further engraved plate. (Browning, occasional spotting.) Later brown half-morocco, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (endpapers replaced, mark to rear cover). - And three further volumes relating to London (including 'National History and Views of London and its Environs', 2 vols., 1834, 8vo) (4).

BEWICK, Thomas. The History of British Birds. Newcastle: for Sol Hodgson, for Beilby & Bewick, 1797-1804. 2 vols., first edition, early issues, 8vo (210 x 120mm.) Numerous wood-engraved illustrations and vignettes by Thomas Bewick. (Some browning, spotting to title-page, faint creasing to some leaves.) Original speckled calf, gilt lettering to spines (rebacked, endpapers replaced, rubbing to extremities). Note: has the 4th edition of 'A General History of Quadrupeds' advertised at rear of volume 1. Provenance: William Collier (ink name to initial blank of volume 2); E. Hamilton-James (ink name to both title-pages).

HUNTING. - Lawrence RAWSTONE. Gamonia: or, the Art of Preserving Game. London: Herbert Jenkins Limited, 1929. Limited de luxe edition, this being one of 125 copies, 4to (257 x 218mm.) Introduction by Eric Parker, 15 colour plates by T.J. Rawlins. (Slight spotting verso of the frontispiece). Contemporary green half-morocco, five raised bands to the spine, two red morocco lettering pieces to the second and fourth compartments, repeating gilt to the rest, t.e.g. (small mark to upper cover).

AFRICA. - Paul B. DU CHAILLU. A Journey to Ashango-Land: and Further Penetration into Equatorial Africa. London: John Murray, 1867. First edition, 8vo (223 x 135mm.) 3pp. a.l.s. from du Chaillu to a 'Mrs Muller' loosely inserted, 23 plates, including frontispiece and title-page vignette, folding map to rear, 32pp. publisher's advertisements. (Some spotting to the map, upper joint weakening.) Original purple cloth with gilt vignette of the plate 'Prisoner of Nchogo' to upper cover, gilt lettering to spine (some sunning to spine, bumped to spine ends). Note: the letter reads 'Dear Mrs Muller, luck seems to turn against me. On my return this evening from a dinner party I found your kind letter and invitation to come and spend Sunday at Ridge-hurst waiting for me. Unfortunately I have a previous engagement to go and spend Sunday in the country, nothing could have delighted me more than to come and to pay you a visit and meet Miss McMurdo, alas I cannot do it. It was so kind of you to think of the poor forlorn stranger. It is just like you. With kindest regards to yourself and Mr Muller and to Miss McMurdo, believe me, yours very sincerely, P.B. BARCLAY, James. A Complete and Universal Dictionary on a New Plan. London: for Richardson and Urqhart, W. Otridge, et al, 1774. First edition, 4to (210 x 124mm.) To rear an 'Outline of Ancient and Modern History' and 2pp. on 'The Most Usual Christian Names of Men and Women'. (Toning, occasional browning, lacking initial blank, some loss to rear blank.) Contemporary black half-morocco (surface wear and loss, rubbing).

[BEWICK, Thomas and John]. Emblems of Mortality; Representing, in Upwards of Fifty Cuts, Death Seizing all Ranks and Degrees of People. London: T. Hodgson, 1789. 12mo (154 x 92mm.) Woodcut frontispiece, 51 woodcuts in the text by Thomas and John Bewick. (Browning throughout, date on title trimmed and to several leaves, text unaffected.) Near contemporary calf (some surface loss to upper cover and to spine ends, rubbing). Provenance: J. Hill (ink name to front-free endpaper).

FISHING. - Isaac WALTON and Charles COTTON. The Complete Angler; or, Contemplative Man's Recreation, being a Discourse on Rivers, Fish-Ponds, Fish, and Fishing. London: for Samuel Bagster, 1808. Seventh edition, 4to (279 x 216mm.) Portrait frontispiece, 16 engraved plates, including the 2 engraved music plates. (Occasional spotting throughout, paper repair to all leaves between pp.97-122.) Contemporary straight-grain morocco, five raised bands, gilt lettering to the second compartment, elaborate gilt design to the rest, g.e. (front cover detached). - And one further volume (2).

TRAVEL & EXPLORATION. - William COXE. Travels into Poland, Russia, Sweden, and Denmark. London: T. Cadell, 1785-1790. 3 vols., second edition, 4to (284 x 215mm.) 13 folding maps and plans, 13 engraved plates, 5 genealogies, 2 engraved plates within the text. (Small tear to map of Russia, some browning to maps.) Contemporary tree calf, rectangular gilt borders, green morocco lettering pieces to the second and fourth compartments of the spines, gilt lettering, elaborate gilt design repeating to the rest (rubbing to extremities). Note: volume 3 is the first edition of 1790. Rarely found in three volumes. Provenance: Thomas Hutton (bookplates to the front pastedowns) (3).

Portrait frontispiece, numerous uncoloured photographic plates, folding maps and facsimiles and illustrations. (Mild toning.) Original green pictorial cloth, two black morocco lettering pieces to the spines, gilt lettering (bumped to spine ends). Note: the work that clarified Marco Polo's route, matching his travels as recorded in his Livre des Merveilles du Monde with present day locations. - And a further volume (Henri Cordier's 'Ser Marco Polo, notes and addenda to Sir Henry Yule's edition', 1920, 8vo) (3).

HOOPER, William Eden. The British Empire in the First Year of the Twentieth Century. London: Heywood and Company Limited, [n.d. but 1902.] Limited edition de luxe, this being one of 1000 copies, 4to (276 x 211mm.) 2 folding maps in colour, numerous photogravure plates, including scenes of Ceylon, India, Africa, Hong Kong, Malta and Malaysia, tissue-guards, also numerous photogravure plates of 'notable men' of Empire and also 'types of native races'. (Browning to tissue-guards, occasional minor spotting to verso of plates.) Original vellum covers, gilt lettering to upper covers and spines (minor soiling). Provenance: Sir Charles Euan-Smith, soldier and diplomat (gift inscribed from him in ink on both front-free endpapers where he mentions that himself is one of the 'notable men' in volume 2); Edith Euan-Smith (gift inscribed to her in ink on the front-free endpapers); Philip Charles Euan-Belsan (gift inscribed to him in ink on the front-free endpapers) (2).
