A rare late 16th/early 17th century green velvet and metal thread embroidered rectangular box, possibly for containing lace or holy communion wafers, the hinged lid and sides heavily embroidered with raised metal thread foliage embellished with seed pearls and red paste stones, the interior lined in ivory-toned fabric embroidered in gilt metal thread with the chalice and wafer of the eucharist within a surround inscribed 'IOAN CAPT 6 QVI MANDVCAT HVNC PANEM VIVIT INACTERNUM', which translates 'John VI... Whosoever Eateth This Bread Shall Live For Ever', width of box 23cm.
