LOT 2540
A rare and important 17th century tortoiseshell and ivory mounted folding fan and a related leather glove of royal interest, both reputedly given to Jane Lane as a gilt by King Charles II, the fan with two tortoiseshell guards and ivory sticks piqué inlaid with scrolling foliage, the vellum panel painted with a scene of the 'Rape of Europa' to one side and floral sprays to the other, length 27cm, within a card case, the fine cream leather glove embroidered in silk and metal threads with flowers and scrolls to the cuff, length 28cm. Note: by family repute the fan and glove were given by King Charles II, after the Restoration, to Jane Lane, in gratitude for helping to save his life after the battle of Worcester in 1651. Provenance: by family descent to the present owner. Exhibited in September 1946 at the City Museum and Art Gallery, Bristol. Note: a non-transferrable ivory exemption certificate has been granted for the sale of this item.
