An extremely rare mid-17th century silver Charles I memorial medal by Thomas Rawlins, dated 1648, obverse with bust of Charles facing left in full regalia within a border detailed 'Successor verus utriusque' (true successor of each) with entwined roses, reverse with hammer striking a diamond on an anvil with legend to border 'Inexpugnabilis 1648' (unconquerable), diameter 41mm, weight 16.4g (extremely fine with lovely even old cabinet tone), with an old ink-written ticket, detailed 'Sale 47/514 £8'. Note: this medal was produced after the King's death on 30th January 1649 to celebrate his fortitude. Provenance: the collection of the late Robert Pearce of Normanton Hall, Normanton-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire.
