LOT 105
Attributed to Joseph Farquharson - 'Silence of the Snow' (Bucket Mill on the Feugh, Finzean), early 20th century oil on canvas, signed recto, Christie's stencil verso, 75cm x 49.5cm, within a gilt composition frame. Provenance: the property of Lear James Drew Esq, Christie's London, 18th February 1911, Lot 50. Note: this work is a smaller version of 'Silence of the Snow', exhibited to great acclaim at the Royal Academy in 1907. Farquharson often copied his own paintings in order to satisfy the strong demand for his work, or to provide an original for engravers to copy. The size of the canvas corresponds to many of his own copies, and the pin-holes at the corners are a characteristic seen in the artist's other works, including Lot 65 in the current sale. The larger version exhibited at the Royal Academy was sold at Christie's, 12th December 2013, Lot 87.
