A Chinese Canton export ivory 'puzzleball' chess set, mid-19th century, one side stained red, the other left natural, depicting the Chinese versus the Mongols with kings as emperors, queens as empresses, bishops as mandarins, knights as horsemen, rooks as elephants and pawns as infantrymen, all raised on 'puzzleball' stems and carved foliate circular bases, height of king 15.5cm (some faults).
