A Regency rosewood circular specimen marble centre table, in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster, the circular top inset with radiating bands of specimen marbles, including lapis lazuli, malachite, porphyry and agates, within a border of verde-antico, the table edge carved with a continuous band of acanthus leaves, raised on a carved tulip cusp stem with a beaded knop, the triform base issuing carved scroll feet fitted with castors, height approx 73cm, diameter approx 83cm. Note: during the late 18th Century and early 19th Century many specimen marble tops were brought back from the Grand Tour. Gillows are known to have supplied tables to support marble slabs purchased in Italy by Stephen Tempest and his family; see page 337 in Volume I of 'Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840' by Susan E. Stuart.
