Photographs, Autographs and Ephemera

PHOTOGRAPHS. An album containing approximately 80 small format photographs of America and Canada, early/mid-20th century, photographs 7cm x 11.5cm, including views of aircraft and military personnel.

SCOTLAND. A collection of 8 original ink and wash drawings by John Timms Baldwin, mainly of the Argyll countryside, including views of Oban, Castle Stalker and Dunollie Castle, dated between 1824-38 to verso in pencil, signed with initials, most 18cm x 26cm.

MANUSCRIPT. A hand-written book of minutes from the Westminster Bridge Office, London, 1762-63, 18cm x 11cm, containing 69pp. in three legible hands detailing a list of the 'Commissioners' and of 'nobleman balloted', then minutes relating to meetings on municipal works, mainly the paving of roads. Note: contains detailed notes on the 'experiment' and the progress of paving Parliament Street and York Street with 'Edinburgh paving stones', followed by work on Bridge Street and Albermarle Street while consideration is given to lighting lamps in York Street, mention is also made of sewers and '11 projecting water-sprouts' planned for Shugg Lane. Provenance: Mr. Townshend (name inscribed verso of upper cover).

PHOTOGRAPHS. A panoramic albumen-print photograph by B. Ellot, titled and dated 'Johannesburg 1889', in twelve sections and backed onto linen, overall 24.5cm x 340cm (rolled).

CIRCUS. A small group of ephemera relating to the circus and stage shows, including a hand-coloured print titled 'The Siamese Twins, Ching and Eng', a playbill for the Strand Theatre featuring 'Harlequin and Gulliver or the Clown in Liliput', 2 sheet music covers, and an aquatint titled 'The Aztec Lilliputions from Central America'.

LEGAL DOCUMENT. A Commonwealth indenture on vellum dated 1651, signed by Thomas Coke, Richard Sydenham, R. Harison and two others, 54cm x 72cm, hung with five wax seals, framed and glazed with wax seals outside the frame.

ARREST WARRANT. An arrest warrant dated 1834 to apprehend George Mallalieu of Sunnyside, Lancashire, the document 23cm x 18.5cm, Mallalieu, an apprentice at Calico printers was 'guilty of divers misdemeanours and miscarriages in his said apprenticeship and particularly that he hath abraited himself from his employment', signed by William Grey, framed and glazed.

PLAYBILLS. Three theatre playbills or programmes for performances in Brighton, including a performance at the Theatre Royal, Brighton, 27cm x 42.5cm and another at the Brighton West Pier, 24.5cm x 37cm, all framed and glazed.

PLAYBILLS. A playbill for the Victoria Theatre, London, promoting performances on the week commencing Saturday January 25th 1868, 37.5cm x 50cm, including performances of The Wild Tribes of London, and 'a grand and magnificent Christmas Historical Pantomime, entitled Charles II and Pretty Nell Gwynne', together with five later theatre playbills, all framed.

LORD NELSON. An Edwardian tissue-paper souvenir handkerchief commemorating the death of Lord Nelson in 1805, 36.5cm x 37cm.

KEW BRIDGE. A souvenir tissue-paper napkin, circa 1903, commemorating the 'State opening of Kew Bridge by the King and Queen' (torn with loss) and 2 further souvenir napkins relating to the opening of Parliament, each 36cm x 36cm.

NORWICH. A collection of ephemera and paperwork of Norwich and bell ringing interest, all relating to the Very Reverend Gilbert Thurlow, formerly Dean of Gloucester, including a partially illuminated Peal book, a quantity of Peal cards, enamelled campanology badges, an engraved 'Society of College Youths, London' certificate, letters and booklets.

"FILMS. An archive of material relating to John Palmer, including photographs taken when Captain during the Second World War, as well as letters and press and other photographs from his work as production manager on films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, including 3 typed letters signed by director David Lean, one dated July 5th 1963 mentions the Profumo affair 'I can't tear myself away from the papers because I'm just mad about the Profumo - Keeler hilarities. Real and imaginary', and also announcing 'I'm going to make another picture - Not ""The Keeler Story"" but ""Doctor Zhivago"" by Pasternak and asking Palmer to join as production manager, another letter dated September 9th '63 formalises the offer and the final letter dated June 14th 1964 discusses more technical and budget queries. The archive also includes a folio of letters and notes regarding Libya as a filming location for Lawrence of Arabia, circa 1960, a programme for the 'Royal World Premiere' of Lawrence of Arabia on December 10th 1962 with accompanying 'Supper Party' menu from Grosvenor House, and a signed photograph of Laurence Olivier in naval costume dedicated and dated 1958, 33cm x 26.5cm."

BUCHANAN, Jack. A signed and dedicated black and white photograph of Jack Buchanan, 29cm x 19cm, together with a group of photographs and ephemera relating to Buchanan, including a photograph dedicated to him by Douglas Fairbanks, a script by Peter Woodward and a photograph of Buchanan with Elsie Randolph.

PHOTOGRAPHS. An album containing approximately 55 photographs of South Africa and the Boer War, photographs 8cm x 10cm to 16cm x 20.5cm, some captioned within the image, including 6 of football matches, a few of barracks and camps, and a few machine-prints.

SHEET MUSIC. A collection of approximately 44 sheet music books, all pop music from the 1960s, including 13 songs by the Beatles, and others by Cliff Richard and The Shadows, The Searchers, The Kinks and The Fortunes.

RAILWAYS. A group of sixteen Railway Acts, circa 1886-1914, empowering the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway Company to extend stations and lines, add footbridges and crossings etc at various southern venues, including Horley, Three Bridges, Ifield, Clapham Junction, Mitcham, Chipstead, etc, also to settle disputes with the Oxted & Groombridge Railway Company and the South Eastern Company, together with a book of related interest.

COMMUNISM. A collection of 10 booklets relating to communism, circa 1940's. Includes 'Concerning Marxism in Linguistics' by J. Stalin, 'This is Communism' by H.W. Henderson, 'Why Work?' by Dorothy L. Sayers, 'The Coming of the Corporate State' by A. Raven Thomson and Herbert Read's 'The Philosophy of Anarchism' and the centenary edition of the 'Communist Manifesto' by Karl Marx and F. Engels.

FASCISM. A collection of 10 items relating to Oswald Mosley and fascism in England, circa 1933-1948, including the first issue of 'Blackshirt' newspaper in 1933 and four booklets by Mosley (including 'Menace of Russian Communism', 1949, and 'A Policy for Britain', circa 1948).
