Agnes Clara Tatham - 'Portrait of Mrs Thompson' [Half Length Portrait of Elizabeth Georgina Thompson], 20th century oil on canvas, signed recto, titled verso, 40cm x 29.5cm, within a gilt frame. Note: Agnes Clara Tatham (1893-1972) was a British artist celebrated for her contributions to early 20th-century art. Born in Wood Green, London, she was the daughter of a dental surgeon and grew up in a supportive middle-class family. Tatham pursued her artistic education at the Southend School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in London. Her career began in the early 1920s, marked by a blend of traditional and modern influences. She exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1918 to 1961, the Paris Salon and the Royal Society of British Artists, showcasing her talents in portraiture and landscape painting. Tatham's style evolved over time, incorporating bold and abstract elements influenced by modernist movements. The sitter, Elizabeth Georgina Thompson nee Kennedy (1891-1978) was the second wife of aircraft designer Norman Arthur Thompson.

Lilian Strang Neilson - 'Sun and Oranges', 20th century oil on board, 35cm x 34cm, within a stained wood frame. Provenance: gifted by the artist to the Late Mrs Elizabeth Rose Joyce Maude Smith in 1997. Note: Lilian Strang Neilson was a distinguished Scottish artist known for her evocative works capturing the rural and coastal landscapes of her native Scotland. Born in Kirkcaldy in 1938, she went on to study at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art from 1956-60 where her tutors included Hugh Crawford and Alberto Morrocco. She attended summer school at Hospitalfield House where she met and became friends with Joan Eardley. After a travelling scholarship to France and Italy, Lilian moved to the Scottish coastal village of Catterline sharing a studio with Joan Eardley and Annette Stephen. The three artists worked closely together, capturing the unique landscape, wild seas and ever changing atmospheric conditions of Catterline. Lilian Strang Neilson died in Aberdeen in 1998, leaving behind an enduring legacy as one of Scotland's most important modern painters. Provenance: gifted by the artist to the Late Mrs Elizabeth Rose Joyce Maude Smith in 1997.
