Clocks and Barometers

An early 20th century brass circular cased ship's timepiece, the Coventry Astral movement with platform escapement, the 8-inch painted circular dial with Roman hour numerals and slow/fast indicator and inscribed 'Fenn & Son Isleworth', the cylindrical case on a mahogany backplate, diameter 32cm.

A Victorian rosewood and brass inlaid mantel timepiece, the circular brass dial with black Roman hour numerals and inscribed 'Viner & Co Royal Exchange London', the octagonal case with foliate inlaid decoration, flanked by a pair of embossed brass foliate boss and loose ring handles, on a rectangular plinth base, inset with a cut brass panel depicting a scene of a rider standing on the back of two horses and three further horses ahead, on brass ball feet, height 51.5cm.

A late 19th century French brass cased hanging wall clock with eight day movement striking on a gong, the embossed dial inset with enamel hour plaques, within beaded and ropetwist borders, the frame cast and pierced with shields, scrolls and trophies or war, diameter 38cm, hung from a mask and scroll link chain.

A George III mahogany bracket clock, the brass twin fusee movement with verge escapement chiming quarters on six bells and striking hours on a larger bell, the backplate with floral and scroll engraved decoration, the 7¾-inch brass breakarch dial with silvered strike/silent indicator to arch above a silvered chapter ring, the matt gilt centre with date aperture and recessed silvered plaque, inscribed 'Gravell & Tolkien London' and numbered '2610', all cornered with cast and pierced gilt foliate spandrels, the case with pad top and brass carrying handle above a moulded arch pediment, glazed doors and pierced brass scale fret panels to sides, on a moulded rectangular base and brass bracket feet, height 45cm, with winder. Note: the partnership of William Gravell & John Benjamin Tolkien took over the business of Eardley Norton on his death in 1792 and continued working from St John Street, London, until 1820. John Benjamin Tolkien is believed to be the great great grandfather of 'The Lord of the Rings' author J.R.R. Tolkien.

A late 19th century French inlaid rosewood portico mantel clock with eight day movement striking on a bell via an outside countwheel, the enamelled circular dial with Roman hour numerals and indistinctly signed, within a cast gilt foliate surround, the arched top and rectangular base inlaid with foliate scrolls, united by barley twist columns, height 49.5cm, with cast ormolu and nine rod pendulum.

A mid-19th century French ormolu and ebonized portico mantel clock with eight day movement striking on a bell via an outside countwheel, with nine rod pendulum, the silvered circular dial with black Roman hour numerals and two subsidiary dials and indistinctly signed, within a cast foliate ormolu surround, the rectangular top and base applied with ormolu festoons, united by four columns, on disc feet, height 62cm.

A Regency mahogany bracket timepiece with eight day single fusee movement, the 8-inch circular painted convex dial with Roman hour numerals and inscribed 'Meyers Birmingham', the arched case with applied foliate mouldings, on a plinth base and ball feet, height 43cm, with pendulum (some faults).

A late Victorian mahogany wall shelf with circular barometer surmount above a bevelled mirror back panel and mercury thermometer, the shelf with pierced gallery above a pierced apron, height 73.5cm (some faults).

A late Victorian gilt bronze and banded agate novelty mantel timepiece and matching mantel barometer, each finely modelled as a ship's wheel, centred with a silvered dial framed by banded agate handles, on an engraved rectangular base, each front applied with a plaque inscribed 'Woodcock Llandudno', the timepiece with platform escapement, the barometer with curved mercury thermometer, height 35.4cm.

A late 18th century stained oak longcase clock with eight day movement striking on a bell, the 12-inch square brass dial with matt centre, silvered subsidiary seconds and date aperture, within a silvered chapter ring with black Roman hour numerals and inscribed 'Fra Dorrell London', cornered by cast and pierced gilt amorini and orb spandrels, the hood with swan neck pediment above glazed door and turned columns, the trunk with rectangular door, on a plain base and plinth, height 209cm, with pendulum, two weights and winder (alterations and restoration).

A mid-18th century oak longcase clock with thirty hour movement striking on a bell via an outside countwheel, the 11¼-inch square brass dial with foliate engraved decoration and Roman hour numerals and inscribed 'WM Parkes', the hood with moulded pediment, glazed door and turned columns, the trunk with rectangular door, on a plain base and plinth, height 190cm, with pendulum and weight (alterations and restoration).

A late 17th century brass five pillar month going longcase clock movement striking on a bell via an outside countwheel, the 12-inch square brass dial with later added break arch, the matt centre with silvered subsidiary seconds and date aperture, the silvered chapter ring with black Roman hour numerals and outer Arabic minutes, inscribed 'Jos Foster Exchange Alley', cornered with cast and pierced gilt mask and scroll spandrels, together with a pair of late 17th century month going brass cased weights (one with added securing nuts), housed within a later mahogany longcase clock case, the hood with moulded arch pediment and glazed door above an arch trunk door, plain base and bracket feet, height 213cm, with a Scottish painted bob pendulum. Note: Joseph Foster is a recorded London clockmaker, apprenticed in 1684, gaining his freedom from the Clockmakers Company in 1691 and working from his Exchange Alley London address until 1707.

A George III oak longcase clock with thirty hour movement striking on a bell via an outside countwheel, the 14¼-inch circular silvered dial with black Roman hour numerals and subsidiary date dial and inscribed 'John Malkin Kirkby', the hood with swan neck pediment, glazed door and turned columns, the trunk door flanked by corner columns, on a plain base and plinth, height 204cm, with pendulum and weight. Note: John Malkin is a recorded clockmaker working in Kirkby-in-Ashfield Nottinghamshire between 1771 and 1780.

An early 19th century French ormolu, white marble and black slate portico mantel clock, the eight day movement with silk suspension and striking on a bell via an outside countwheel, the enamelled convex dial with black Roman hour numerals and inscribed 'Á Paris', the ormolu drum shaped case with flower-charged basket surmount flanked by ivy swags and anthemion finials above a tasselled festoon, the rectangular columns applied with ormolu female figures above hippocampi, on a plinth base and disc feet, height 50.5cm, with mask pendulum and winding key (minor repairs).

A 19th century oak and mahogany crossbanded longcase clock with eight day movement striking on a bell, the 14-inch painted breakarch dial decorated with two galleons to arch above Roman hour numerals, subsidiary seconds and date dials, inscribed 'G. Black Musselburgh', the hood with swan neck pediment, glazed door and turned columns, the trunk with arched door above crossbanded base and bracket feet, height 239cm, with pendulum and two weights.
