LOT 4010
A rare Arts and Crafts oak, ebony and pewter inlaid upright piano, 'The Valkyrie', designed by Leonard F. Wyburd for Liberty Design Studios, circa 1902, the movement by J. & J. Hopkinson, the case with projecting sides flanking a panel inlaid with three pewter and ebony flowerheads, the hinged keyboard cover with a pair of oversized wrought metal hinges of scrolling strapwork form, the shaped front uprights inlaid with matching flowerheads issuing from stylized ebony scrolling stems above polished metal cap terminals, the sides fitted with hinged flaps, the movement numbered '62780', straight-strung and under-damped, height 127cm, width 166cm, depth 72cm (lacking original candle sconces). Note: a similar example of the Valkyrie piano is illustrated in 'Liberty's Furniture 1875-1915' by Daryl Bennett, p.208.
