(Spotting on the backing leaves and to front blank, minor marginal loss to front-free endpaper and front blank.) Original cloth-backed boards with mounted paper illustration to upper cover (light rubbing, faint pencil marks to lower cover). Note: all illustrations and tabs in original working order. Provenance: Mary Done (gift inscribed to verso the front-free endpaper).

(only, of 8). 8vo (232 x 143mm.) Half-titles, engraved portrait frontispiece. (Spotting to all preliminaries and rear leaves, marginal damp-stain to frontispiece.) Contemporary half calf (rebacked, spotting to pastedowns, insect-damage to extremities, slightly dust-soiled). Provenance: Frederic Thesiger, Lieutenant General, Viceroy and Governor-General of India 1916-21 (bookplates to front pastedowns). – And a further seven volumes (including John Gurwood’s ‘Selections From the Dispatches and General Orders of Field Marshal The Duke of Wellington’, 1841, 8vo, and Roger North’s ‘The Lives of the Right Hon. (Heavy browning in places, spotting to margins, some dust-soiling.) Contemporary calf (lacking some lettering pieces, insect-damage to spine ends, dust-soiled, worn). – And a further three volumes (T.C. HUMPHREYS, Henry Noel and John Obadiah WESTWOOD. British Moths and Their Transformations. London: William Smith, 1843-1845. 2 vols., first edition, 4to (268 x 207mm.) Titles, 124 hand-coloured lithographed plates, tissue-guards. (Lacking half-titles, scattered spotting, mostly marginal, some dust-soiling.) Contemporary brown full morocco, gilt decoration to covers, g.e. (extremities rubbed, dust-soiled). – And a further volume by H.N. Humphreys and J.O. Westwood (‘British Butterflies and Their Transformations’, [42 plates], 1841, 4to). Provenance: by descent from the estate of Frederic Thesiger, Lieutenant General, Viceroy and Governor-General of India 1916-21 (3).

SEWELL, Anna. Black Beauty, the Autobiography of a Horse. London: Jarrold and Sons, 1894. First illustrated edition, inscribed by L. Edith Sewell, 4to (248 x 141mm.) Illustrations by John Beer, tipped-in portrait frontispiece. (Toning, occasional finger-mark.) Original pictorial blue cloth (fading to spine and upper cover, extremities rubbed). Note: ‘Black Beauty’ was Anna Sewell’s only novel. She died in 1878, five months after publication. After a lifetime of fitful poverty she lived long enough to see her novel become a success. Anna had no children but her brother, Philip, had seven and Lucy Edith Sewell was one of her five nieces. Provenance: ‘Benny’ (gift inscribed to in ink on the half-title by L. Edith Sewell).

RACKHAM, Arthur (illustrator). – Jacob Ludwig and Wilhelm Carl GRIMM. The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm… translated by Mrs. Edgar Lucas. London: Constable & Company Ltd., 1909. First edition, 4to (247 x 184mm.) 40 tipped-in colour plates, black and white illustrations all by Rackham, captioned tissue-guards. (Some corner creasing to the plates, browning, marginal spotting, severe insect-damage to one tissue-guard and creasing to others, dust-soiling.) Original red cloth (tear to spine panel, worn). – And a further eight miscellaneous volumes (including Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s ‘Little Brother & Little Sister and Other Tales’, 1917, 4to) (9).

London: [Riccardi Press] Philip Lee Warner, 1913. 3 vols., limited edition, this being number 56 of 500 copies only, 4to (267 x 196mm.) 36 mounted colour plates by William Russell Flint, captioned tissue-guards. (Toning, spotting to pp.27-29 of vol. 1.) Original cloth-backed boards, mounted paper labels to spines and upper covers, t.e.g. (spines browned, some loss to top of spine of vol. 2), dust-jackets to vols. 1 and 2 (browned, brittle, with some loss to spine panels, the number ‘56’ in manuscript to spine panels) (3).

Original red cloth, dust-jacket (light spotting to inner flaps and upper panel). – And a further twenty-four volumes relating to Lewis Carroll (including ‘Stand-Ups, Adventures of Alice in Wonderland’ designed by Sidney Sage, [all pieces intact], 1964, folio, and Clive Harcourt Carruthers’ ‘Alicia in Terra Mirabili’, 1964, 8vo, and some ephemera relating to performances of ‘Alice in Wonderland’) (25).

With 2 hand-coloured woodcuts by Hans Schäufelein, text in German. (Minor finger-marking.) – And a small quantity of 16th century leaves (including 6pp. from [attrib. to Antoine de la Sale.] ‘Les Quinzes Joies du Mariage’, third edition(?) [circa early 16th century] (small quantity).

OXFORDSHIRE. – Vernon J. WATNEY. Cornbury and the Forest of Wychwood. London: Privately Printed by Hatchards, 1910. Folio (391 x 284mm.) Folding map and plan, 75 photogravure plates, captioned tissue-guards. (Toning, offsetting to endpaper edges.) Original full morocco bound by Hatchards, t.e.g. (stain to base of spine).

KENT. – Thomas PHILIPOTT. Villare Cantianum: or Kent Surveyed and Illustrated. Being an exact Description of all the Parishes, Burroughs, Villages, and other respective Mannors Included in the County of Kent. London: William Godbid, 1659. First edition, folio signed in 4s (288 x 179mm.) Engraved initial and engraved illustrations in the text, a long near contemporary ink inscription on the second blank relating to authorship of the book. (Lacking map, marginal tear to B3 and minor soiling to G2, browning and damp-staining throughout, occasional ink annotation and underlining, first and rear blanks replaced.) Contemporary speckled calf, later red morocco lettering piece to the spine (rebacked and tips repaired, endpapers replaced). Note: the ink inscription on the second blank is a quote from White Kennet, being pp.37-38 of his ‘Life of William Somner’ that was published in Somner’s ‘Treatise of the Roman Ports and Forts in Kent’, 1693, where he established that Thomas Philipott’s father, John, was the author of ‘Villare Cantianum’. Provenance: J. Marsh (ink name on second blank); ‘E.B.’ (ink initials on title).

PRINTING. – James DOYLE. A Chronicle of England B.C. 55- A.D. 1485. London: Longman, Green, et al., 1864. First edition, 4to (270 x 194mm.) Title in red and black, numerous wood-engraved colour illustrations printed by Edmund Evans. (Small mark to half-title, toning.) Near contemporary green straight-grain morocco bound by Riviere with gilt fillet borders, the spine in five compartments with double raised bands and red morocco onlays between, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (minor scuffing and staining to upper covers, rebacked with original spine laid-down). Note: with each illustration printed in up to ten colours, Evans considered this ‘the most carefully executed book I have ever printed’.

BOËTHIUS, Gerda. Anders Zorn. Stockholm: Nordisk Rotogravyr, 1954. Limited edition, this being number 680 of 1200 copies, 4to (288 x 211mm.) Tipped-in colour plates, numerous black and white illustrations. (Toned, slight marginal damp-stain to preliminaries.) Original brown full morocco, Zorn’s blind-stamped signature to upper cover, red and green morocco lettering pieces to the spine, t.e.g. (minor staining to covers).

HUNTING. – Geoffrey SPARROW. The Crawley and Horsham Hunt. London: The Sporting Gallery, Ltd., [1931.] Limited edition, this being number 171 of 500 copies signed by Geoffrey Sparrow, 4to (304 x 247mm.) Numerous illustrations, folding map in rear pocket. (Toning, stain to rear endpaper and cloth pocket.) Original half vellum over red cloth, gilt lettering to upper cover and spine (light staining to covers). Note: includes a tipped-in photographic postcard titled ‘The Crawley and Horsham Hunt at Ashington. (Run to Earth)’.

ARCHITECTURE. – Victor DELASSAUX and John ELLIOTT. Street Architecture, a Series of Shop Fronts and Facades, Characteristic of and Adapted to Different Branches of Commerce. London: John Weale, 1855. Folio (369 x 257mm.) Title, additional engraved title and 21 engraved plates, tissue-guards and letterpress leaves to each. (Some spotting and damp-staining to most plates, corner loss to one tissue, lacking blanks.) Original boards (rebacked, endpapers replaced, repair to lower cover). – And three related volumes (‘Villa and Cottage Architecture: Select Examples of Country and Suburban Residences Recently Erected. With a Full Descriptive Notice of Each Building’, [80 plates], 1868, folio, and ‘Daily Mail Ideal Labour-Saving Home’, 1920, 4to, and L.
