MANUSCRIPT. [A hand-written and illustrated hymn-book written in Church Slavonic for the Festal Stikherarion, Russian Old Believer. N.p.: early 19th century.] 264pp., manuscript, folio (255 x 201mm.) 12 preliminary leaves with text in black and red, 1 full page illuminated title in red, green, gold and black, 252 leaves of text in black and red in semi-uncial script, 8 coloured decorative headpieces, 7 marginal coloured decorations, 7 elaborately decorated initials including 1 eight-line initial, 1 six-line and 4 five-line initials. (Browning, occasional paper repair, some minor soiling.) Blind-stamped calf over (possibly) earlier wooden boards (rebacked, some loss to extremities, some insect damage to pastedowns).

Engraved frontispiece, 'Table des Matiéres' and 4pp. errata to rear. (Browning, occasional spotting, frontispiece adhering to endpaper, lacking blanks.) Contemporary calf (rebacked, endpapers replaced). Provenance: Mrs Hannah More (gift inscribed to on the title-page); Graham Wenman (card mounted to front pastedown). - And a further seventeen volumes in French related to history and religion (including Sieur de Moleon's [Jean Baptiste Le Brun des Marettes] 'Voyages Liturgiques de France ou Recherches', 1718, 8vo) (18).

BUNYAN, John. The Holy War Made by Shaddai upon Diabolus. London: S. Crowder, 1782. 12mo (149 x 83mm.) 7 woodcut illustrations. (Browning, occasional spotting.) Contemporary calf (rebacked with paper, hand-written title to spine, rubbing). Provenance: John Wickenden (name inscribed verso front blank); Mary Packham (name inscribed on front blank). - And a further eight volumes, mainly religious (including Hugo Grotius' 'The Truth of the Christian Religion', 1711, 8vo) (9).

STANSBURY, Howard. Exploration and Survey of the Valley of the Great Salt Lake of Utah, including a Reconnoissance of a New Route Through the Rocky Mountains. Philadelphia: Lippincott, Grambo & Co., 1852. 2 vols. (including map volume), 8vo (223 x 134mm.) 47 lithographed plates, many tinted, including 2 folding, 1 folding lithographed map, 2 large folding engraved maps in separate slipcase. (Toning, browning and spotting to some plates, especially verso, the two large maps backed onto linen in sections, some spotting.) Modern tan cloth with original red morocco spine label (endpapers replaced), modern tan cloth-covered slipcase. Note: Stansbury's work was the first scientific survey of the flora and fauna of the Great Salt Lake Valley. He also provided early and favourable impressions of the Mormon Church who had settled there in 1847, and a description of their 'President'- Brigham Young. Provenance: J.W. (Toning, uncut leaves, spotting to advertisement leaf.) Original blue cloth, pictorial gilt (wear to spine ends). Provenance: L.R.W. (name inscribed on half-title). - And a further thirteen volumes relating to glaciers, the Alps, and Mont Blanc (including James D. Forbes' 'Norway and Its Glaciers, Visited in 1851', 1853, 8vo, and by the same author, 'The Tour of Mont Blanc and of Monte Rosa', 1855, 8vo, and M. (Toning, minor spotting to front and rear leaves.) Original green cloth, pictorial gilt to upper cover (fading, rubbing to extremities). Half-title, 4pp. 'Subscribers', 42 aquatint plates engraved by Mrs. Mantell, including 4 hand-coloured and 2 folding, 1p. publisher's advertisement to rear. (Spotting to frontispiece, browning, marginal spotting to plates, some corner creases, toning.) [Bound with:] MANTELL, Gideon Algernon. Illustrations of the Geology of Sussex: Containing a General View of the Geological Relations of the South-Eastern Part of England; with Figures and Descriptions of the Fossils of Tilgate Forest. (Heavy damp-stain to first four plates and to the fossil plates, browning to folding plates, toning, lacks large separate geological map.) LOWER, Mark Antony. The Churches of Sussex. London: John Russell Smith, 1872. 4to (274 x 210mm.) 83 plates etched by R.H. Nibbs, illustrations in the text. (Light to moderate spotting throughout, creases to front and rear free endpapers.) Early 20th century brown morocco, g.e. (minor rubbing to extremities). Provenance: H.J. West (pencil inscribed to title-page).

MANUSCRIPT. [A collection of hand-written documents relating to the Lee family of Pinchinthorpe Hall, Yorkshire. N.p.: circa 1780s-1920s.] 134pp., manuscript, 4to (322 x 198mm.) Comprising numerous bound-in hand-written documents, mostly early 20th century copied extracts from the wills and probate in York registry relating to the Lee Family, also copied extracts of baptisms, tomb inscriptions, 3 mounted post-cards, a baptism certificate from 1827. (Browning, occasional spotting.) 20th century blue half morocco bound by Truslove & Hanson. Note: contains genealogical information relating to the Lee family back to the 15th century. The family bought Pinchinthorpe Hall in the late 16th century, and left in 1836 after the suspected suicide of John Lee. Includes a note from Roger Lee: 'Sir, my father tells me that his grandfather was left the whole Estate of Hatfield, but was disinherited by reason that he went beyond sense to study the Philosopher's Stone'.

Crosby, 1798. Abridged, 8vo (210 x 126mm.) Engraved folding map, 1p. publisher's advertisements to rear. (Toning, minor insect-damage to upper margin throughout, lacking half-title.) Contemporary marbled calf, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (rubbing to extremities, slight loss to top of spine, 'West' on the spine label spelt 'Wast Indies'). - And a further three volumes (4).

AQUINAS, Thomas. Catena Aurera. Rome: apud haeredes Antonius Bladus & Joannes Osmarinum Giliotus, 1570. Signed in 8s (305 x 213mm.) Title with woodcut ornament surrounding a portrait of Aquinas, decorative initials, printer's device to rear. (Moderate damps-staining throughout, browning, some spotting, marginal insect damage Q8-T2.) Near contemporary vellum (some loss to spine). Note: scarce, not in Adams. Provenance: Bernard Miller (name inscribed to initial blank).

CATHOLICISM. Missale Romanum ex Decreto Sacrosancti Concilii Tridentini restitutum, S.Pil V. Pontificis Maximi. Venice: Paul Balleoni, 1713. Signed in 8s (308 x 217mm.) Engraved title in red and black, historiated initials with some rubricated, musical notation. (Browning, minor soiling, occasional marginal annotation.) 20th century brown calf over marbled paper-covered boards, red morocco lettering piece to the spine. - And three further religious volumes (including, without a title-page, another 'Missale Romanum' [circa early 17th century], 8vo) (4).
