DRAPARNAUD, Jacques Philippe-Raymond. Histoire Naturelle des Mollusques Terrestres et Fluviatiles de la France. Paris and Montpellier, [circa 1805.] 4to (307 x 202mm.) Half-title, 'Avertissement' and dedication by Madam la Veuve Draparnaud, errata leaf, 13 engraved plates. (Toning, occasional browning, minor spotting to title-page.) Near contemporary black half morocco over black buckram-covered boards, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (some loss to spine ends, rubbing to all extremities, blanks and endpapers replaced). Note: at his death, Draparnaud left numerous unpublished and incomplete writings, this being the only one that wasn't lost. A companion volume to this work was published in 1831 by A.L.G. Michard. First edition, 8vo (211 x 123mm.) 37 hand-coloured lithographed plates with tissue-guards. (Toning, some browning, spotting to the tissue-guards.) Brown half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, later black morocco lettering piece to spine (rebacked with original spine laid-down, endpapers replaced.) Provenance: Ann Capron (gift inscribed to on the initial blank; B.S. Third edition, 'Atlas' volume only, 4to (279 x 194mm.) 3 engraved frontispieces, including the allegorical plate by Chadel after Boucher, 80 engraved plates of shells after designs by Jacques and Jacques-Guillame de Favanne interleaved with 65pp. in contemporary manuscript hand the names of the shells. (Lacking portrait, marginal damp-staining to the frontispieces, toning, occasional mild spotting.) 20th century black half morocco over marbled paper-covered boards (lightly bumped spine ends). Provenance: B.S. Morton, marine ecologist (bookplate to the front pastedown).

ETCHING. - William HOGARTH. The Analysis of Beauty. Written with a view of fixing the fluctuating Ideas of Taste. London: J. Reeves, 1753. First edition, 4to (253 x 200mm.) Title with woodcut vignette, 'Contents' leaf with errata verso and frontispiece etching of Colombus's Egg with contemporary manuscript description mounted verso the frontispiece. (Frontispiece loose, front blank loose, lacking the 2 engraved plates, toning, spotting to title-page margins and rear leaves.) Contemporary calf (upper cover detached, rubbing). Provenance: 'Doctor Fry' (ink inscribed on front blank); 'Lady Paul' (gift inscribed to on the front blank); Rev. ROXBURGHE CLUB. - [Samuel BUTLER.] Sidneiana, being a Collection of Fragments relative to Sir Philip Sidney Knt. London: William Nicol, 1837. Limited edition, 4to (273 x 192mm.) Folding facsimile frontispiece of Sidney's hand-writing, title in red and black, the 'Lord Bishop of Lichfield' [Samuel Butler] lettered in red on the members' list. (Toning, stitching broken, loose-leaves, spotting to blanks.) Contemporary black morocco-backed boards (worn). Note: being a keen collector of Sidney manuscripts, Butler put together this choice of rare and unseen material. This work was part of a 19th century re-appraisal of Sidney's reputation and this was Butler's own copy. Provenance: Samuel Butler (name in red on list of members).

[WALMSLEY, Edward.] Physiognomical Portraits. One Hundred Distinguished Characters from Undoubted Originals. London: for the Proprietor, sold by John Major et al., 1821-1824. 10 parts., first issue Subscribers' edition, this being number 99 of 100 copies of Proofs on Indian Paper, folio (300 x 227mm.) 104 engraved portraits with tissue-guards, 4pp. biographical text to each, engraved title-pages, 4 extra plates including a duplicate of Michelangelo and of Van Dyke, plus a cancel variant of portrait of Joshua Reynolds. (Marginal damp-stain to rear leaves of part 8, toning, occasional mild spotting, title loose in part 7, some mis-matching in the last two parts, e.g. Shakespeare should be in part 8 but is in part 9.) Near contemporary limp red morocco, black morocco lettering piece to upper covers (all spines worn, soiling). Note: it was published again in two volumes in 1824 (10).

Contemporary calf, later black morocco lettering piece to the spine (rebacked, original spine laid-down, hinges strengthened). - And a further two volumes (Gertrude Jekyll's 'Old West Surrey', 1904, 4to, and a trade catalogue from 'Messenger & Co. Oblong 4to (245 x 316mm.) 4 original lithographs by Picasso, one in colour, numerous plates, text in English translated by Patrick Gregory. (Slight toning to corner of colour lithograph.) Original red cloth, pictorial designs after Picasso stamped in black to upper cover (small mark to upper cover), slipcase (slight fading, minor rubbing to corners).

[TYPESCRIPT.] - Trevor HALL. Marianne Foyster of Borley Rectory. A Biographical, Psychological, and Psychical Investigation. [N.p.:] Leeds, 1958. Vol. V. One of 3 copies only, large 8vo (250 x 183mm.) Mounted photograph of Marianne Foyster verso the initial blank, long hand-written authorial note signed and dated by the author on the initial blank, title-page with hand-written annotation, 11pp. duplicate type 'Introductory Note' recto only, 122pp. duplicate type main text recto only, 5pp. 'Index' recto only. (Mild toning.) Contemporary brown morocco, gilt borders with corner-pieces and lettering to upper cover, gilt turn-ins. Note: includes a loosely inserted typed a.l.s. where Trevor Hall says that this volume 'gives the last word, in my opinion, on the Borley mystery but which for obvious reasons can never be published'. It's understandable. Hall has written an astonishing, if possibly fevered, account of the life of Marianne Foyster which makes the supernatural hauntings of Borley Rectory pale in comparison. It's worth remembering, as Marianne herself does in these recorded interviews, that her incumbency of the rectory is only one part of the Borley story. It was known as the most haunted house in England before being demolished in 1944. But this manuscript conveys a sense that the incumbent may have been haunted, as much as the house. - And a related volume, the book that Trevor Hall felt able to publish ('The Haunting of Borley Rectory' by Eric J. Dingwall, Kathleen M. Goldney and Trevor Hall, 1956, 8vo). Provenance: T. Morely (named recipient of the a.l.s.); by descent, from the estate of Barry Murray (2).
