JERDON, Thomas Caverhill. The Birds of India, Being a Natural History of all the Birds Known to Inhabit Continental India. Calcutta: for the Author by Military Orphan Press, 1862. First edition, with two tipped-in a.l.s. and a separate mounted signature, 2 vols. in 3, 8vo (227 x 142mm.) (Toning, occasional annotation in ink to margins, lacking 8pp. from volume 1.) Contemporary half calf over green cloth covers, two black morocco lettering pieces to the spines (some rubbing, lacking some of the lettering piece from volume 3, staining to calf of volumes 1 and 2). Note: one 3pp. letter from the author is sent from Cashmere [Kashmir] and asks the recipient to send some seeds, the other letter, 4pp., to the same recipient ('Henderson'), mainly discusses trips (presumably bird-hunting) and wanting an anatomical examination of a bird to solve a dispute. Provenance: J.M. Chichester (ink name to front-free endpaper of volume 3). Provenance: from the estate of the late Frank Warren (3).
