Numerous woodcut illustrations. (Light spotting to preliminaries.) Near contemporary brown morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, gilt lettering to spine, t.e.g. (rubbing to extremities). Note: the 27-line letter discusses specimens of field mice. Provenance: R.H. Valpy (name inscribed to front-free endpaper). - And a further six volumes related to natural history (including T.C. Near contemporary maroon morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, t.e.g. (rubbing, sunning to spine, endpapers replaced). CIVIL WAR. - Thomas GUMBLE. The Life of General Monck, Duke of Albemarle, &c, with Remarks Upon His Actions. London: by J.S. for Thomas Basset, 1671. First edition, 8vo (178 x 105mm.) (Lacking portrait frontispiece, without errata leaf to rear, marginal loss to Ee7, occasional browning, minor soiling, unidentifiable name to title, offsetting of last leaf onto rear blank.) Near contemporary mottled calf, brown morocco lettering piece to the spine (rebacked, tips restored). Note: there is a variant with an errata leaf to rear. Provenance: Stanley Crowe (pencil name to front pastedown). [ESTC R17075].

[STEVENSON, Robert Louis.] The Trial of James Stewart in Aucharn in Duror of Appin, for the murder of Colin Campbell of Glenure. Edinburgh: for G. Hamilton and J. Balfour, 1753. First edition, small 4to (190 x 118mm.) Folding map, appendix. (Map bound at rear with tape repairs to verso, lacking leaf Gg5, ink stain to N2, marginal tears to Gg2 and Nn2, a later tipped-in front blank, browning, minor soiling.) Contemporary calf, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (rubbing to extremities). Note: James Stewart was hung while proclaiming his innocence. Robert Louis Stevenson used a fictionalised account of the murder in his novel 'Kidnapped'. The case has failed to rest. As recently as 2008 there were attempts to re-open the investigation and prove James Stewart's innocence. Provenance: Society of Procurators, Perth (bookplate to front pastedown).

Early 20th century red half morocco (fading to spine, rubbing, endpapers replaced). Note: this is the first volume of the epic erotic roman-fleuve that was eventually completed in forty-two volumes. - And a further seven volumes in French (including an early French Bible [lacking titles], 8vo, and a further volume relating to France 'Fabliaux or Tales, Abridge from French Manuscripts of the XIIth and XIIIth Centuries by M.
