Essai sur L'Étude de la Littèrature. Dublin: Hallhead, 1777. (Occasional browning, one or two contemporary ink annotations, a few corner creases, occasional spotting, marginal damp-stain to initial blanks of volume 2.) 8vo (218 x 117mm.) Contemporary calf, red morocco lettering pieces to the spines (volumes 4 and 5 with some loss to the lettering pieces, rubbing to extremities, binding split in volume 13). Note: volume 1 and 2 are dated 1776, the year of the first London printing. Volumes 3,4,5 and 6 are dated 1781, volumes 7,8,9,10,11, and 12 are dated 1788. Volume 13 which is the 'Vindication of Some Passages…' volume is dated 1779. J.E. Norton's bibliography states that when the Dublin edition came out David Hume advised Gibbon to put the footnotes at the end of the page rather than the end of the volumes and Gibbon decided to take this advice with the next printing of the London edition. Index of painters to rear, 4pp. of publisher's advertisements. (Mild toning.) Original red cloth, gilt lettering to upper cover and spine (lightly rubbed to extremities). Note: scarce. Influential in evolving the study of history to include a society's art and culture, Burckhardt was possibly the first to use the word 'modernity' in an academic context and, in this book, he gave the Victorians a guide book to Italian art to accompany them and their Baedeckers on the Grand Tour. - And four further travel related volumes (including Bradhsaw's 'Hand-Book to Brittany', [1868], 8vo) (5).

London: Walter Scott, [1889.] 4 vols., first UK edition, 8vo (186 x 119mm.) 4pp. publisher's advertisements to rear of each volume, publisher's advertisement tipped-in to volume 2. (Toning, very occasional spotting, browning to pastedowns.) Original blue cloth, gilt ornaments and lettering to upper covers and spines (spine lean to volume 1 and 2, spine seam splitting to volume 2 and 4, heavily rubbed to extremities). Note: the first UK edition, based on Nathan Haskell Dole's American translation of the same year but without his preface. Provenance: Dorothea Fripp (name inscribed to f.f.e.p.s); Kathleen Wills (name inscribed to f.f.e.p.s).

CHILDREN'S BOOKS. - Maurice SENDAK. The Nutshell Library. [London:] Collins, [1964.] 4 vols., signed by Maurice Sendak, 16mo (88 x 59mm.) Numerous colour illustrations. Original yellow cloth, dust-jackets (faint rubbing), all contained within a single pictorial slipcase (slight rubbing). Note: signed in ink by Sendak on the f.f.e.p. of 'Pierre' in a presentation inscription that includes a small ink drawing of a sitting dog in profile. First published in America by Harpercollins in 1963, the set includes the tales 'Pierre', 'One was Johnny', 'Chicken Soup with Rice' and 'Alligators All Round'. Provenance: Leslie Linder (signed in ink inscription).
