(Browning to margins.) Sown thread to left margin. Note: rare. Each plate contains two vignettes, one in outline.

SUSSEX. - [William TELL]. Ancient and Modern History of Lewes and Brighthelmston. Lewes: for W. Lee, 1795. First edition, 8vo signed in 4s, (212 x 122mm.) (Spotting to preliminaries and rear leaves, stamps and ink annotation to title.) 19th century calf-backed marbled-paper covers (rubbing to extremities). Provenance: West Sussex County Libraries (bookplates to endpapers, stamps). - And sixteen further volumes relating to Sussex (including 'Calendar of Documents Relating to the Abbey of Robertsbridge Co: Sussex', 1873, 4to) (17).

SUSSEX. [A collection of bound ephemera relating to the election of a new Member of Parliament for Lewes in 1816. Lewes: Lee and Baxter, 1816.] Folio, (77 x 112mm to 327 x 208mm.) 38 electoral leaflets (2 hand-written), comprising poems, letters, adverts and political propaganda relating to the period February-March 1816. (Occasional creasing, browning, circular stamps to most pieces.) Later green cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Note: bound in chronological order, the leaflets trace the events from when Thomas Read Kemp resigned as M.P. for Lewes and it was expected that the successor would be J. Scarlett. However, a riot of indignation ensues when Mr. Scarlett's friend, John Shelley, also decides to stand. The subsequent leafleteering is satirical, often funny ('WANTED IMMEDIATELY, an ORATOR, to speak the sentiments of a 'perfectly independent Cock-Fighter, and Bull-Baiter, a person of small stature, and adapted to the Pocket, will be preferred'), while also reflecting wider issues around religious tolerance. SUSSEX. - L.F. SALZMANN. The History of the Parish of Hailsham. Lewes: Farncombe & Company, 1901. First edition, 8vo (214 x 138mm.) Folding map as frontispiece, 1 folding genealogy, 13 plates. (Light spotting to preliminaries, toning, stamps verso of the title.) Original green cloth, gilt lettering to spine (bumped to spine ends, label remains to base of spine). Provenance: Worthing Public Library (bookplates to the pastedowns). - And a further thirty-six volumes relating to Battle and Battle Abbey (including the Duchess of Cleveland's 'The Battle Abbey Roll', 3 vols., 1889, 8vo) (37).

(Occasional browning, spotting to margins and verso of plates.) Near contemporary brown half-morocco (rebacked, endpapers replaced, rubbing to all extremities. Note: volume 2, 3, and 4 only. Provenance: George Herbert (ink name to initial blanks); Worthing Public Library (bookplates to front pastedowns).

MOZLEY, Charles (illustrator). - Geoffrey CHAUCER. The Canterbury Tales, translated by Nevill Cogill. [N.p: n.d. but circa 1983-1986.] 8 parts in 4 vols., elephant folio (588 x 415mm.) Numerous tinted and black and white lithographed plates by Charles Mozley. Unstitched as issued within card wrappers, contained within four cloth portfolios with ties. Note: includes The Prologue and The Wife of Bath's Tale, The Summoner's Tale and The Clerk's Tale, The Merchant's Tale and The Shipman's Tale, The Miller's Tale and The Reeve's Tale (4).

WOODBURN, Samuel. Woodburn's Gallery of Rare Portraits. London: for the Proprietor, by George Jones, 1816. Vol. 2 (of 2), large laper copy, folio (428 x 275mm.) 106 engraved portraits, 1 folding. (Moderate spotting throughout, damp-staining to lower margins of most leaves.) Original straight-grain red morocco, stamped in gilt and blind to both covers, five raised bands to the spine, gilt lettering to the second and third compartments, elaborate repeating design to the rest, g.e. (rubbing to extremities).

HORSE-RACING. British Sports and Sportsmen, Racing, compiled and edited by 'The Sportsman'. London: Sports and Sportsmen Limited, 1920. Limited edition, this being number 518 of 1000 copies, folio, (369 x 262mm.) 25 photogravure plates with tissue-guards, numerous illustrations within text. (Mild toning.) Original red morocco, five raised bands to spine, gilt lettering to the second and fourth compartments, repeating gilt design to the rest, g.e. (rubbing to spine ends, slight sunning to spine).

ARCHITECTURE. - Frederick NASH. A Series of Views, Interior and Exterior, of the Collegiate Chapel of St. George, at Windsor; with Illustrative Plates Explanatory of its Architecture and Ornaments. London: Frederick Nash, 1805. Limited edition, this being one of 250 copies, folio (679 x 495mm.) Title with vignette, 10pp. of introductory text, engraved plan within text, 8 loose-leaf engraved plates, 2 of which are proofs, most with tissue-guards. (A closed tear to one page of text, browning and some chipping to the right margin of most plates.) Original blue card wrappers, paper label to upper cover (spine lacking, worn).

(Occasional spotting, minor soiling.) Original black morocco, gilt borders, gilt lettering to spine (heavily rubbed). Provenance: E.H. Note: photo-historian Stanley Burns wrote that 'many dermatologists became photographers; however none received greater prominence in the photographic community than Piffard'. Later maroon half-morocco, gilt lettering to spine (endpapers replaced, surface rubbing to spines).
