(Moderate spotting.) Contemporary green morocco gilt, double fillet gilt borders with corner fleurons, gilt turn-ins, g.e. Note: The letter from Patmore reads 'My dear Lord Houghton, as you like typographical rarities allow me to offer you a volume of which as yet only six copies have been published…'. Contemporary blue morocco by Zaehnsdorf with pictorial gilt in imitation of the original cloth to the upper cover, gilt turn-ins, t.e.g., the original cloth front cover and spine bound in to rear (faint sunning to spine). Engraved vignette to title-page. Engraved additional decorative title, 11 plates of coat-of-arms, the folding plate of 'Hugh Lupus' in parliament, 2 double-page maps, 2 engraved illustrations; in the 'Island of Man' a double-page map, 2 plates (1 coat-of-arms), 1 full page illustration. (Some browning and finger-marks.) 19th century morocco by Henry Young & Sons, gilt borders with corner fleurons and blind-stamped decoration, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (some fading to spines and wear to spine ends). Note: often attributed to Daniel King - who printed the engravings. Burton, 1800. First edition, signed by the author on the dedication page, 4to (289 x 168mm.) Printed 'on the first useful paper manufactured solely from straw'. (Page repair at p.25, a wrinkle to rear endpaper.) Late 19th-century blue straight-grain morocco, decorated in blind (rubbing to extremities). Third edition with de-luxe presentation binding, inscribed by the author to 'Lord Houghton' in ink on the half-title, 8vo (183 x 117.) Photographic frontispiece, folding map. (Some spotting to preliminaries and rear leaves.) Original deluxe presentation red morocco with gilt titling to upper cover and silvered vignette of a salmon, g.e. (lightly rubbed to edges, some marks to upper and lower covers). Note: loosely inserted is a 5pp. a.l.s to 'Lord Houghton'. DU CHAILLU, Paul B. A Journey to Ashango-Land: and further Penetration into Equatorial Africa. London: John Murray, 1867. First edition, 8vo (222 x 136mm.) Tipped-in 4pp. a.l.s. by the author to 'My Dear Burton' [Sir Richard], 23 plates (including frontispiece and title-page vignette), folding map to rear, 32.pp publisher's advertisements. (Mild toning, browning to margins of map.) Original purple cloth with gilt design of the plate 'Prisoner in Nchogo' (bumped to extremities, sunning to spine). Note: the letter is addressed to fellow explorer and writer Sir Richard Burton, and is a detailed and affectionate account of du Chaillu's explorations into the interior of West Africa ('I dare hardly hope that I shall reach the Nile…' and having 'succeeded pretty well with photography' he describes the sight of twenty gorillas destroying seventy plantain trees. He also writes of Speke, James Augustus Grant and refutes the notion of a gorilla dance: 'his Gorilla dance is but a fancy of his imagination', and of his hopes of returning to England with various specimens.
