A printed postcard titled 'Landing Stores at St. Kilda' postmarked Aug 28 1930 with message from 'Mike' [Lannigan] 'Dear Mum & Dad, This card is being [sent] by a chum of mine. I can't get ashore myself. This is the last mail to leave St. Kilda, Love from your Son Mike', together with a photographic postcard of a ship in icy waters, also sent by Mike, and a postcard-size photo of six sailors, one being identified verso as 'Mike Lannigan centre front'. Note: the following day, 29 August 1930, the 36 islanders from St Kilda were evacuated to the mainland at their own request. The sender of the postcards, Mike Lannigan, must have been on HMS Harebell, the ship that evacuated the St Kilda islanders, when he sent the postcard from St Kilda the day before the evacuation. The message on the photographic postcard of a ship in icy waters begins 'No. 10 Mess, HMS Harebell': this card was posted just two months before the St Kilda card was posted on 28 August 1930. We can conclude that Mike Lannigan continued serving on HMS Harebell and therefore was directly involved in the evacuation of the islanders, a key episode in Scottish history.
