Photographs, Autographs and Ephemera

PHOTOGRAPHS. A collection of 37 mostly reddish-brown or bluey-green toned heliogravure photographs by Lehnert & Landrock, Tunis, all scenes in Africa, each 30.5cm x 24.5cm, all with photographer’s logo recto, a few with copyright verso, including a few duplicates.

PHOTOGRAPHS. A cloth-bound album containing 48 sepia toned photographs of female nudes and women in deshabille, circa 1890-1900, each 10cm x 7.5cm.

PHOTOGRAPHS. A collection of eight photographs of India, including a portrait of Bikram Singh at Simla, 16.5cm x 12cm, together with a group of ephemera of similar interest.

PHOTOGRAPHS. An album containing 26 cartes-de-visite of people connected to Cambridge colleges, together with another album containing 20 cartes-de-visite.

PHOTOGRAPHS. An album containing 24 cartes-de-visite photographs of British and European royalty.

PEEL, Robert. An autograph letter signed by Robert Peel, dated Saturday 11 May and addressed to ‘My dear Sir’, 1p. 18.5cm x 11.5cm, the a.l.s. inviting the recipient to his home to meet ‘some amateurs’. Note: Robert Peel was twice Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

PHOTOGRAPHS. An album containing approximately 109 mounted photographs and occasional mounted postcards and prints, the majority of America, circa 1890-1920, leaves 27cm x 20.5cm, the photographs include views in American National Parks and camping, and later a few views of Salonika, together with two wallets titled ‘Salonika Fire, 18-19th August 1917’ containing mounted and captioned photographs, and another wallet of ephemera relating to Salonika. Provenance: Major Robert Peel, descendant of the British Prime Minister.

POLITICS. A cabinet card photograph of Benjamin Disraeli, titled ‘Earl of Beaconsfield, K.G. Photographed at Osborne by Command of H.M. The Queen, July 22nd 1878, by Jabez Hughes, Ryde, I.W.’, together with a Gladstone/Disraeli election flier and a book on Disraeli.

AUTOGRAPHS. An album containing approximately 49 tipped-in photographs of Second World War aviation interest with neat annotations, circa 1950s-1960s, leaves 26.5cm x 30cm, most photographs 9cm x 14cm, including six signed photographs by Douglas Bader, Alan Deere, James Edgar ‘Johnnie’ Johnson, R. Stanford Tuck, Adolph Gysbert ‘Sailor’ Marin and Jeffrey Quill and six accompanying letters signed by R. Stanford Tuck, Johnnie Johnson (2), Douglas Bader, Alan Deere and Jeffrey Quill, compiled by Peter S. Wainwright.

ALBUM. A scrap album containing approximately 60 photographs, watercolours, sketches and other items of ephemera, circa 1870, leaves 25cm x 31cm, together with approximately 50 loose pages from a disbound album of prints and ephemera, mainly albumen prints of the Lake District and Channel Islands, leaf size 18.5cm x 23cm.

ALBUM. An album compiled by Ilma Radley nee Ilma de Poelinitz Healey, circa 1936, leaves 25.5cm x 30cm, containing approximately 146 photographs, many of India, and items of ephemera, including a ‘Special Pass for Rehearsal of the Ceremony of the Coronation, May 10th 1937’. Note: Ilma Radley was the daughter of Col. Charles Healey CMG and Baroness Elia Poelinitz, she married Hugh Poynton Radley MC, later Brig. CIE. He was a Brigade Major of the Jhansi Brigade.

PHOTOGRAPHS. A collection of approximately 50 photographs of military aviation before and during World War II, together with 9 ephemera pieces of similar interest, sizes ranging between 6cm x 8.5cm and 19cm x 26.5cm.

PHOTOGRAPHS. A collection of 25 photographs of naval ships, circa 1930 to 1950, including a photograph of Winston Churchill boarding a vessel, sizes ranging between 6.5cm x 11cm and 16cm x 24cm.

PHOTOGRAPHS. A collection of 11 mounted prints of military groups, naval diving and the Royal Engineers, circa 1857, sizes ranging between 16cm x 27cm and 26.5cm x 35cm, together with six cabinet cards and seven cartes-de-visite of similar interest.

ADVERTISING. A collection of 15 Guinness advertising booklets, comprising ‘Happy New Year’, ‘Untopical Songs’, ‘What Will They Think of Next?’, ‘Reigning Cats & Dogs’, ‘Hobby Horses’, ‘Alice Versary’, ‘Alice, Where Art Thou?’, ‘Game Pie’, ‘Alice Aforethought’, ‘Prodigies and Prodigals’, ‘My Goodness! My Gilbert and Sullivan’, ‘Can This Be Beeton?’, ‘Songs of Our Goodfathers’, ‘A Guinness Sportfolio’ and ‘Album Victorianum’, with illustrations by Edward Ardizzone, John Nash, Rowland Emmett, Gerard Hoffnung, Rex Whistler, Antony Groves-Raines and Ronald Ferns, together with a miniature Guinness bottle.

AUTOGRAPHS. Two albums containing approximately 195 clipped signatures and letters compiled by Peggie Lewis circa 1880-1910, including letters by George Augustus Sala, Michael Farraday, Edward J. Poynter, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Sydney Grundy, as well as clipped signatures and autographs of Lord Randolph Spencer-Churchill, John Everett Millais, Marie Studholme, Billie Burke, Haywood Hardy, Henry Irving, William F. Cody ‘Buffalo Bill’, J.M. Barrie, Nellie Melba, Ellaline Terriss, Dan Leno, Lily Hambury, Ellen Terry, Lilian Braithwaite, Nancy Maude (Nancy Price), C.B. Fry and W.G. Grace.

EPHEMERA. A folder containing 15 items of ephemera relating to the London and South Western railway, including a programme of the opening of the new Waterloo Station by the King and Queen on 21st March 1922.
